Teaching English To The Younger Child

Good teaching tips are worth their weight in gold, and since I myself have been the recipient of many a good tip, it's now time to pay it forward. So here are three tips to help you teach English to your younger child/children.

Tip Number 1: Ham it up as much as possible when trying to teach your younger children…they are all about fun and good times, and seldom about “let’s study!” There are a lot of things you could do to engage your youngster. Here are just a few ideas:

Dress up before the lesson in something that grabs their attention (Maybe put on a funny hat or scarf with some sunglasses and say, “Today your going to have Mrs. Peabody as a teacher.”

When doing sentence drills, be an actor when reading the sentences and give little commentary to tie in with the sentences. Also use rhyme as much as possible, because it’s a great tool to get kids to remember things, and Dr. Suess didn’t end up wildly popular by chance!

Incorporate artwork into your lessons whenever possible, even if it's something as simple as them drawing colorful boxes around certain words that they're having trouble learning. Maybe even make rough outlines of objects and have them trace them and write sentences underneath. Or work with them to create their very own book, which is always an excellent way of benefitting a child that's having trouble with learning.

Tip Number 2: Whenever possible use ethereal thinking to get a child’s attention. What do I mean by that? Having them catch on to some concrete concept by using something that’s not concrete at all.

Example: I frequently use the word “secret code” a lot with little kids when I teach math and there is a concept they’re not getting. For whatever reason, if they think something is like a secret code they are more motivated to learn it. I guess everybody wants to be a detective…heck, you could even dub them Detective Crack-the-Code, and they’d step up to the plate because of it.

Tip Number 3: Use music when teaching the grammar–it helps kids to remember what nouns, pronouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives, and interjections do. That’s probably why Schoolhouse Rock did so well. And by the way, if you don’t have any Schoolhouse Rock DVDs, you should definitely get some. They were the single most important teaching tool I used when helping my daughter learn grammar, and I was SUPER glad I had them.
