Teaching Tips For Teaching The Younger Child English

Looking for some effective yet easy teaching tips for English? Are you a home schooler, or someone looking to bridge your youngster over to the next school year? This article might help, and because I’m a firm believer that “less is more,” there will only be three tips. Far better to take a few nibbles and be nourished than to over-eat and get sluggish from too much input.

Before I begin, let me help you to take on a new state-of-mind. The first thing you’ll need to do is shake off your old one by making this positive confession over yourself, “Today is a brand new day. I don’t need to look back, and I don’t need to stay frustrated by whatever we haven’t accomplished. I am kissing failure “goodbye” and declaring that my child/children and I will now have a fresh start. What’s behind is behind and from this point forward we will have success regarding every subject, including English. ”

So learning DOES NOT need to be a can of worms–REALLY! If you take an “easy does it” approach and only focus on one lesson at a time, patience will perfect the process and each lesson will build upon the previous one. Progress WILL BE MADE.

Tip Number 1: Whatever workbook or textbook your child is working with, go through the lesson without them first and put in colorful notes, stickers, and real life fun details to help bring the lesson to life.

Example: If you’re teaching your child about interrogative sentences and they’ve had a hard time remembering why it’s called interrogative; tie in the whole interrogation room/police scenario. Say to them, “You know how police men and detectives interrogate suspects? Well, they ask the suspects questions, right? They interrogate them … just like the interrogative sentence asks questions.” (Make sure you put emphasis on the word interrogate so they get it.) From that point forward THEY WILL REMEMBER that an interrogative sentence asks questions. So tie in things they can relate to, especially from television.

Tip Number 2: Remind them that there is no such thing as a stupid question. Reassure them that no matter how hard it seems, they will get it because they’re smart. Tie in some little story about something that took you a long time to get.

Tip Number 3: Use games that engage them and make them think; especially games that use their senses (sound, touch, sight, etc.) This will help them remember.

Example: If the lesson is about pronouns, then make up a bunch of fun sentences and show how hard it would be if you kept using the proper nouns in the sentence versus the pronouns. Tell them it’s like using code…kids love the idea of anything being code. (Sample sentence: Myra went to the beach to search for sea shells. Myra found some large shells. Myra dipped her toes in the cool water and laughed…Myra giggled when the sand went in between her toes.) You can point out to them how silly it sounded when the name Myra kept getting repeated.

I even like to say things like, “You know the word pronoun starts with the word pro, which means for you or in your favor…well, if using the same proper noun makes you look silly or not-so-bright, then a PRONOUN is in your favor to make you sound more intelligent.”

Example: Use 4×6 cards and put proper nouns and pronouns on them. Have them jump from card to card telling you whether they are nouns or pronouns. Maybe even start an M&M pile and reward them with one M&M per each time they get one right.

Of course you can expand on these ideas greatly, and I’m sure you will … until then, happy teaching!
