The Wisdom Of the Educated – Are We Too Old to Learn?

“I’m a believer that as long as we can breathe, we can learn.”

“You have to be educated enough to know what you don't know.”

Two quotes I came across in a discussion group of Golf Course Superintendents with whom I'm involved in the USA. These words meant so much to me, that an article formed immediately. The very basis of our education today is first to teach you how to learn and secondly to teach one common sense.

I was the Chairman of the Turf Managers Association in a province in South Africa and whilst in the position I became aware of the problems the members had on different courses. I always advocated that one should consult those in the area, as they were likely to have experienced similar problems. The more I became aware of problems the more I realised that no one was listening to my recommendation.

Why not, why believe that you don't need help? Why believe that you know everything? Do others when asked look down on you? Well I can assure you this never bothered me, I would ask questions, ask advise and listen to what others had to say. That does not mean I followed their findings or thoughts, but it did place me in a more enlightened place to make an educated, informed decision.

When involved in a profession that is dealing with the nuances of nature, as well as being semi reliant on the very same, you are never in a position to know everything. Weather and seasonal changes have a major influence on the decisions I made daily in my profession, and as I was not in direct contact with God, educated guesses are the norm. For those who don't know my profession its Green Keeping on a golf course, now semi retired, I consult and am busy with a computer program I developed.

Why is it so many younger people believe at a young age that they know everything?

At what age do we oldies realise that it is not true, that “we are never too old to learn” the above adage “I’m a believer that as long as we can breathe, we can learn.” quoted by a much younger man than me, a wise man who will go far in life. The other “You have to be educated enough to know what you don't know.” is normally learnt the hard way, often after a near life defining moment.

I find the realm in which I write an educational one, at my age I am still learning from those younger than I. Articles of ability in fields of my profession, are still daily educating me, I love that the comments flow from wide, giving their own experienced opinion. I have always wanted to learn more and from this medium I have, for more than half my life, a profession I have followed with dedication and education, I am still learning from others experiences.

Keep on sharing this knowledge, none are too old to learn, and learn rather to become educated enough to know what you don't know.

Oh so true. The more I have learned the more that I know that I don't know. Frustrating, humbling, and motivating.... there's always more to learn!

Yes Heather just the point if the youngsters would only believe it.

I didn't believe it when I was young either.... one of the privileges of getting old.... older I mean.

Great thoughts here Rob. Use it or lose it - the brain that is. Learning should be a life long endeavour, lest we become a deadweight on ourselves and society!

How right you are C4rmen, some say we must make room for the new and forget the old, I say you must remember it all and make room for the new.

I have always believed when we become unwilling to learn, we become stale.I do not like stale. Good article Rob, as usual.

I heard a saying that when one reaches a certain age it is necessary to start forgetting some stuff to make room for the new, maybe the stale scenario comes in there.

I remember listening to a radio interview with the Chairman of ICI, who said "common sense is the most important quality in business" I wholeheartedly agreed with this statement, but unfortunately, most people don't see it.

I like this article, it manifests humility. I think it takes wisdom in order for one to learn that education is a continuous process. Learning new things can actually improve brain function. But learning stops when one thinks that he knows everything already. Thanks a lot Rob.

Rob, I was in an important meeting once where the attendees were going around the table introducing themselves and relating which colleges or military academies they had graduated from. When my turn arrived I introduced myself and said I was educated in the school of hard knocks. At first there was dead silence, then the Admiral setting next to me said "Probably the best education at the table" Life and paying attention are great teachers.

This article reminds me of a bumper sticker I've seen: "Hire Teenagers--While They Still Know Everything". I'm afraid there's a physiological aspect to your subject--children and teens have brains that are configured to maximize learning, but a mature brain has less retention and slower comprehension, maximizing the sense of responsibility optimal for raising young. So it's not just Youth that's wasted on the young, it's Learning, as well.

I have seen the firing of too many youngsters due to a lack of common sense, it would so easily have been avoided if a simple "what do you think?" or "have you ever seen.....?" had been used. The art of learning increases with age, why, because we have the sense to know we don't know everything. When in my chosen profession, a person who says they know it all, I will bow down to and worship. I find every day that I consult a new problem never seen before, same disease but differing effects, all due to the local nuances of the conditions, and this is what I enjoy, the discussion that leads to an educated guess of what steps to follow for a corrective result. Never too old to learn.
