5 Tips on How to Reduce Social Anxiety And Regain Your Life

If you're looking to get the most out of life, then it is time to pay attention. Learning how to reduce social anxiety and actually doing the work will be invaluable for you if you are suffering from this emotional sickness. The quote I read a while back, "face your fears and free your soul or the mysteries of life you'll never know", really encapsulates the process of getting over social phobia. Words cannot convey the freedom and euphoria that comes from beating this affliction.

Here are some tips from my experience with 12 long years of this disorder:

1. Take opposite action. Act against your emotions (especially those of fear and anxiety). Do this on a regular basis and you'll send your social anxiety to a long overdue extinction.

2. Work on developing one good habit each month. One of the causes of social anxiety is a low sense of yourself. The most effective way to counter this is to consciously do things that are good for yourself that do not involve unhealthy food or any "splurging" behavior. With each experience, your action will send messages to your subconscious that you ARE worthy, thus overwriting the old beliefs and habits that are perpetuating your misery.

3. Be persistent. Your social anxiety disorder was not created overnight, and, thus, you cannot fix it instantly. It's a habit that is physically ingrained in your brain. You need to work at this daily in order to get rid of it.

4. Focus on doing, not thinking. One way this disease manifests is through overthinking or overanalysis. We're too caught up in our heads. The way to counter this is not to stop thinking, but to focus on taking actions and making decisions instead. Since these negative thought processes are automatic, you cannot "stop" them. Trying to win this battle in your head only strengthens your shyness. Focus on being more active in reality.

5. Focus externally. Insecurity and self-consciousness are two in the same. If you're like me, then you probably become hyperaware of yourself (mostly your faults) in social or performance situations. Work on focusing your attention to your surroundings and to the person or people who you are interacting with. Over time, this will build confidence as your subconscious will realize not to associate people with fear.

Now go apply this stuff. Back in my darkest days of social anxiety, I would read all of this information but never really stick to it. Instead, I needed to take effective action steps on a regular basis. This is the only true way to reduce social anxiety.
