The Art Of Making Decisions

Decisions are an integral part of our lives and they are like tiny turning points in our evolving story. Experts say that we make approximately 35,000 decisions daily. Of course, some of these are small, routine decisions, but each in its own way takes us down a path that opens up new decisions to make.

Our life is a culmination of the decisions we make and bring us to where we are today. Therefore one can argue that decisions are indeed very important. When it comes to more complex decisions it can be a challenging feat. No decision is right or wrong unless we proclaim it to be so. I think we can all agree that decisions that bring abundance are good and ones that don't are not desirable.

When faced with a decision that seems daunting it can be helpful to look at it from a valueless mindset. In other words don't at first put any value on any option so that it is not colored by any preconceived prejudice. Scientists are discovering that results of experiments can be dependent on the expected outcome by the observer. In the same way if while exploring all the options available you have one or two “favorites”, you most likely will not fully explore the possible outcomes of all options.

For instance if you are deciding on your monthly budget, look at every possible way that you can think of meeting your needs. You need housing, clothing, food, transportation, recreation, perhaps childcare, and other expenses. Come up with different ways of meeting each of those needs no matter how outrageous or how much you know that you would never take that option. You could move back in with your parents, share a house with a roommate, stay at home with the children instead of daycare, grow your own food, ride a bicycle or take a bus, etc.. After listing each possible scenario with the associated costs, you might be surprised how much of your budget is taken up by one or two items. Perhaps it is time to change your way of thinking about who you are and how you have to live so that you can actually live more abundantly. Remember, you can't fix a problem in the same mindset in which it was created.

Another strategy to making a decision you are stuck on is one of time. In decisions that you are not clear on, taking some time is often the best solution. Rushed decisions are often wrong. Don't be stewing over your choice in your conscience mind. Believe me your subconscious is going to be working on it and you will probably experience a dream or two. Keep in mind that one trait of successful people is that they make decisions quickly, and there is a difference between quick and rushed.

Recently I needed to make a costly business decision and I just couldn't bring myself to do it. I knew I had about a week to make the decision and I chose to take that time and let the answer come to me. What was frustrating was that I really felt that what I was doing was correct, but still something in me was screaming, “NO!” A few days later I did some more research and found an even better opportunity along the same line, with none of the large cost and just as much potential. That was a very easy decision to make and one that I am glad I used time to make.

With peace, love, joy, abundance, and the knowledge that you make wise decisions,

Pete
