Can Roger Federer Win the 2014 Australian Open?

Federer had a shaky start to 2014...lost to Hewitt

If you follow tennis religously, you probably already know that Roger Federer didn't exactly have the best start to the 2014 year. He competed in the Brisbane International 2014 tournament and although he made the finals of the tournament, he lost to Leyton Hewitt 6-1, 4-6, 6-3. How often did we see Federer losing sets 6-1 before last year let alone to lower ranked players such as Hewitt? Not too often to say the least. It is no secret that Federer's career is finally on a decline but does he still have that last little burst left in him to muster up another Grand Slam? A lot of questions remain for Roger in 2014 and the biggest one right now is, "Can Roger Federer win the 2014 Australian Open"? Although only time will tell, there are certain changes that Federer has made at the end of 2013 that will help us analyze his chances for the upcoming Grand Slam.

Federer working with a new coach (Stefan Edberg)

After deciding to stop working with Paul Annacone, Federer started working with Stefan Edberg as a new coach for his team in 2014. Federer probably felt like Edberg can teach him a quicker style of play that will allow him to attack his opponents at the net and shorten up the points in the process. It is no secret that at 32, Federer does not have the quickness and endurance he once possessed and it will be to his benefit if he can work on a more aggressive style of play that will prevent longer rallies and reduce match time. There is no way Federer can outlast the current heavyweights like Nadal and Djokovic when it comes to endurance in a 5 set match. Edberg was known for his serve-and-volley style of play and we can definitely expect Federer to pick up a thing or two from his childhood hero. For the 2014 Australian Open, expect to see Federer charge the net more and really go for his winners. Will this be the remedy to beat the current best players? It is Federer's only chance and it is certainly possible if executed well.

Federer using a new racket for 2014 (98 sq. in. head size)

Another major change for Federer in 2014 is that he will be using a racket with a 98 sq. in. head size. This is different from his typical 90 sq. in. head size frame that he used throughout his long and successful career. A bigger head size is going to create more power and Federer is probably making this switch to further help him in his hopes to play a more aggressive style of tennis in 2014. A bigger head size will also mean less control on the shots and you can also expect Federer to make quite a few unforced errors as well. If Federer's plan goes well, you should see a lot of winners from the 17-time Grand Slam winner and some shorter matches compared to years before.

An attacking mentality for Federer in the 2014 Australian Open...is it enough?

After a disappointing loss to Leyton Hewitt in the finals of the Brisbane International, Federer stated that he is "very hungry and eager to attack" at the 2014 Australian Open. This is a good sign from the current world #6 tennis player because it shows that he has a lot more left in his tank. Federer is not going to just accept his recent slump and retire. Instead, he seems to have made some major changes and is looking for the solution to continue to play for many more years. Will Roger Federer win the 2014 Australian Open? It is extremely unlikely. But will Roger Federer win another Grand Slam before his career is finished? If he can stick to a more aggressive style of play and reduce court time in his matches, he certainly has a great chance to win at least 1 more Grand Slam before hanging it up for good.
