Tennis mental training is one of most important components of any tennis player, whether professional or amateur, who is continuously trying to improve his game. Even though mental training is frequently overlooked and skipped, it is still one of the key elements for becoming a tennis player that wins.
Majority of tennis players uses to skip mental training as being an almost unnecessary part of training that requires time, but does not result in play being improved. However top-quality players, who you probably want to become someday, know that mental training is of the same importance as physical and skill training. This is due to the fact that mental preparation will be the deciding factor of a tough match where the winner is not so obvious. Whoever is stronger mentally – that player wins.
Have you ever felt like you win fewer matches that you are supposed to? You may perhaps start looking for a problem in your shots, serve or even your equipment, changing rackets and strings or trying different techniques. Unfortunately, this is not the case and nothing is that easy as you may think it is: your performance will not change with the change of your equipment (at least significantly). You are looking for an answer in wrong place absolutely neglecting the mental part of the problem. Does it sound like you?
History knows lots of world-class players who put an emphasis on mental training and completely rebuilt their game improving performance and bringing themselves to success.
Can you believe that Roger Federer from Switzerland who is now widely recognized as the greatest player of all time started his career as a regular teen losing match by match when everyone put pressure on him? He never gave in, but learned how to control his emotions and put his feelings in order when almost everyone was saying that he will never succeed.
If you still do not understand the role of mental game and its training in tennis then we guarantee tennis will never turn to be that enjoyable for you than you expect it to be. Even if you are only playing tennis to keep fit and do any kind of sport for health, you still need to put your mental approach in order. The reason for that is there is a direct connection of your brain to your body whether you believe or not. The more mentally prepared you are, the better results will you achieve.
I totally agree with you regarding the "Mental" aspect of the tennis player! My daughter plays tennis and I know if her mental game is not "on" than the physical game is going to be "off!"
Nice article Luca. Although I personally don't like tennis; never played it :-) ; yet I really agree with the main concept of this article. I believe that when we have that rocks mentally we're going to pass anything smoothly, which could be a giant-task for others. A true winner stands with a winning mentality before the game.
That's right... I will definitely do that ! I like writing about tennis topic and I like to share my experiences with others....
Maybe you should switch to other racket games but still watch tennis and write about it -)
I like yr article on tennis, used to play it when I was younger now not fit and my legs are not strong anymore.
Thank you for the positive feedback about the article.... I still play tennis but not so often as I used to do some years ago. I have got some injuries so the doctor said that I should play not to often and maximum one or twice per week :(..
