Playing Tennis Like Roger

I am a big, by that i mean huge, Roger Federer fan, both of his forehand and the amazing single handed backhand. I've been playing tennis for almost 7 years now and have represented my college for tournaments. This article I'm writing here is just for fun. It will give you a basic idea of how to learn tennis.

Tennis is not an easy game to learn. It takes a lot of dedication and hard work. Some other games like squash and table tennis can be picked up pretty quickly but not tennis. Although it takes the same time to become good at these games, picking up tennis is the most difficult. I do not want to bring your moral down but I'm jsut letting you know that it is gonna take a lot of effort on your part.

There are 2 basic things to start off learning tennis:

1. The grip that you hold

2. Wall practice ( lots of it! )

First off my advice is to train the forehand and back hand one at a time. Get a grip that suits you, keep a rigid wrist and start banging that ball on the wall. Remember to train only one side at a time. Any amount of wall practice you do is less.

Now coming to a little bit more on grips... A full on eastern grip is like holding the racquet with a shake hand kind of grip. A full on western grip (Nadal's) is one gotten when you pick up a racquet lying on the ground. The latter inherently generates more top spin whereas the former produces less. But it all comes down to your racquet speed in the end. So if you want to be consistent like Nadal, take a western or a semi western grip, but to hit winners you do need to flatten out your shots with a little grip change.

Its more important for you to develop your own grip which you are comfortable with and try not to copy others. Trust me, I've tried it and it doesn't work that well. For more inforamtion on this topic and for videos you can go to you tube. It has a lot of amazing vids which teach you how to hit a forehand.

The trick with learning tennis is learning one thing at a time, and then finally combining everything together to get a perfect game. Service I believe is one of the most difficult parts of the game and will require a lot of practice to master. What I usually to while practising serves is place an empty ball can on the other side and try to hit it with my serves.

Try and create such simple practice sessions and keep on working towards it. Never give up and one day you will see yourself playing good tennis. I hope this was helpful in some way!! Cheers..
