Dr Bob Looks at Hypnosis for Weight Loss

Sometimes we embark on a weight-loss program and everything is going well. We like the food we eat and can live on it for the rest of our lives. We found that exercise regimen that we not only follow, but actually look forward to performing. We have the support group in place and they are cheering us on.

Yet something has started going wrong. You find yourself on a breakdown in your weight-loss motivation. You don't know why, but you sense it happening and can't stop it.

There is good news, though. You can re-start, you can re-ignite your program. It is not always easy and it is not always fast. You have gotten far enough into your weight loss to know that quick fixes are just hype and they don't stand the test of time.

There are a few things you can try to rebuild and turn around your weight-loss program. But you will need to be honest with yourself about a few things.

Do you really, truly want to salvage your weight-loss program? This may sound strange and perhaps dumb to you, but you need to first look at this question and see what your personal, hidden from the world, answer is. You may just not want to do it any longer. Nothing I can say or do will help you if you really don't want to be helped.

The next question you must answer is: are you actually burning the fat away. Is this program really working for you? If it is not working, there is no sense to sticking with it. If it isn't working, try something else. Use the information and experience you have gained to revise the program into one that will work for you.

Next, examine yourself to determine what went wrong. This will take some time, so don't rush it. It is a difficult question and can be emotionally painful. But you will not be able to receive help if you aren't willing to take the painful journey of self-examination. It is easier to blame everyone and everything but it is hard to blame yourself. You need to know what is broke and why it is broken.

Next, remember why you started this particular weight-loss program. Yes, you have tried other things, but this program is different. If it weren't, you would have simply walked away like with the others. This time you are trying to correct it before you give up. There is some reason that you are doing this. Find it and you will find the key to correcting your program.

Once you have done all this tough self-examination, you are finally ready to try hypnosis as a possible motivator. Hypnosis is a great tool, but it is not the only tool. It requires more than listening to tapes, CD's or sitting with a hypnotherapist.

Look around out there before buying a hypnosis product. Remember, the subconscious mind controls most of our actions. The subconscious mind must become stronger when using a hypnosis program.

What should you find when using hypnosis? First, it is not quick. It will take time to work. Your subconscious has to break through the conscious mind. The conscious mind is stubborn and won't give in easily.

The hypnosis should include suggestions for keeping the weight off permanently. It should help you to develop a stronger will to eat the right foods, do the right exercises, drink enough water, get enough sleep, and feel better about yourself inside and out.

The subconscious mind will slowly take on the role of caregiver. It is the conscious mind that experiences boredom. The subconscious will tell the conscious mind that the old body and lifestyle are boring and that the new lifestyle is exciting and fun.

Don't be ashamed of using hypnosis. It is not a illusion show in Las Vegas. It is a serious tool that works when you are ready to use it. You have a good support group. Use them. Tell them you are having motivation problems. Tell them that you are turning to hypnosis. They will get excited about it. They probably have only heard about it on television. Their excitement will drive you to continue to use it. Your support group will notice the changes in you before you do. This will support the feedback cycle and will improve your desire and will to continue.

Weight loss is not a one size fits all. It is not a solitary journey. We all get discouraged and want to quit. That is why we look for tools and techniques to help us. That is why we include friends and family into our journey. Enjoy the trip. The destination is worth the effort!

We all tend to live in denial. "I'll start that diet on Monday" syndrome, and Monday never comes. I think the fault is with the feeling of being deprived because of some crappy diet. Better to design a healthy life style, including the way to eat, and form a habit that feels natural. It's unfortunate that a dour medical diagnosis can give us motivation in a flash. Even at that, some people continue to abuse themselves. Hypnosis is a very interesting way to go. Self hypnosis is effective. I use it to handle stress. Thanks for the article Dr. Bob.

I wonder if it's not right at the start where people derail: the "be honest with yourself" bit. Appreciated what you said about hypnotherapy. Truly a tool to be respected and, like many others, needs consistency.
