Thyroid Imbalances

Hormones are secreted directly into the blood stream. They are responsible for carrying chemical messages to body organs for them to perform their functions well. There are many different types of hormones secreted by various glands, such as pineal, pituitary and thyroid glands. Thyroid gland is the master gland of human body. This gland produces an assortment of hormones which are responsible to keep the human body functioning at optimal levels. These hormones can affect mood, energy level, and even weight of an individual.

This article discusses several thyroid conditions and explains why these imbalances occur.

What Are Some Types of Thyroid Conditions?

There are two types of thyroid conditions which can affect you:

• Hyperthyroidism: increased activity of thyroid gland

• Muscle weakness or tremors

• Weight loss

• Enlarged thyroid gland

• Sleep disturbances

• Irritability or nervousness

• Infrequent, scant menstrual periods

• Vision problems or eye irritation

Hypothyroidism

In case of scanty amount of hormones being produced, the body uses energy at a slower rate than it should. Symptoms of hypothyroidism include:

• Fatigue

• Hoarse voice

• Frequent, heavy menstrual periods

• Forgetfulness

• Enlargement of the thyroid gland (goiter)

• Dry, coarse skin and hair

• Inability to tolerate cold

• Weight gain

Other symptoms may include irritability and sleep problems. Please note that some of these symptoms may also indicate depression.
