Many people have issues with time management. Why? Is it really so difficult for us to get to grips with managing our time efficiently.? It certainly seems to be for a lot of us. If you’re one of the people who struggles read on. The fact is that there are really only two main options for dealing with time management and that is dependent upon whether you decide to make the right time management choices.
One option is to carry on as you always have done. Good idea? No - not if you want things to improve. The fact is you already know what you do to try and manage your time and yest it doesn’t work and the fact is it won't if it's not right for you.
Second option is to make some changes. Easy? No – it can be jolly difficult. As humans we are creatures of habit, so adopting new ways of doing something can be a real challenge. Our default position is generally to slip back to what we know and what we’re most comfortable with, even when we recognise it would be better to try something different. However, if you’re determined you can make changes to improve your time management you can do so. It may not happen all at once, but it will happen .
And the fact is that it’s not all gloom and doom. There are lots of different choices that you can make which will make managing your time easier such as planning, scheduling, saying, no, prioritising, delegating, dropping things that aren’t important or paying people to do things for you ... One thing that will help you to choose which options is understanding the reasons why it’s important to make the right time management choices and the difference it will make to your life.
Less stress
Being a poor manager of your time is stressful on so many levels. Poor time management can wreck personal or working relationships. If you’re constantly cancelling appointments, or being late, or miss important events if you’ve over scheduled, you can become ill with the stress of trying to juggle everything in your life. So for your health and well-being adopting more efficient time management systems is a no brainer. There's no excuse for not giving it a go.
Benefits others
If you’re a poor time manager it’s rarely only you that it affects. The ripples of your behaviour often reach far and wide. It’s stressful on others if they can’t rely on you, or know that you’re likely to cancel at the last minute... Not only do they suffer the immediate stress of your actions, it also puts a longer term strain on your dealings with each other which could ultimately threaten to spoil a relationship for ever. Putting in new systems or procedures for managing your time will be welcomed by others. Remember it's all about making the right time management choices - ones that will really work for you.
Achieve greater success
People often underestimate just how much difference they could make to what they can achieve if they sort out how they manage their time. Of course success means different things to other people – so it may be you achieve greater success in your career, in relationships, completing a life-changing challenge... It doesn't matter what it is. Only you can measure what’s important to you, but there’s no doubt if you adopt more efficient time management habits your will be more successful.
Summary
These are only 3 reasons why you should make the right time management choices. There are obviously many more and you can see more examples on my confidence coaching blog. If you’re one of the people who has issues with time management – don’t ignore them. Making the right choices can have a huge positive impact on your life. Start today.
Good article! 3 reasons for making the right time management choices is great information. Indeed making right choices can be jolly difficult as you say. For me, I've found that the only way for me to be truly consistent with exercise is to walk a mile to my daily Mass and a mile back. Being transportation to where I want to be gets me 2 miles consistent exercise that seems impossible to get otherwise. Why is as you say - habits! By tying it to my habit (and lifeline:-) of being at Mass daily I find that it happens. Otherwise? Somehow falls away. This week I walked and a thunderstorm zapped any chance of safely walking. I was surprised that I was disappointed to get a ride back! Then again on Wednesday weather intervened (heat and humidity) along with tiredness and I felt that same surprise at getting a return ride. SO I guess I'm building a strong habit. Thank you for your encouragement and fun article. Good job.
Yes. That seems to help me - habits connected to one another.
People are creatures of habit, difficult to change. I think time management is critical in all aspects of ones life. Just have to have the right mindset and desire to better yourself.
