Dealing With Time Traps

The other day I was reading an article about dismissing some of the time traps that people fall into at work. The points the author made weren’t really relevant to me, but it did get me thinking about how important it is that we should be aware of different time traps and consider what we want to do about them. I’m like the majority of people in that I often complain about the lack of time and yet if I’m honest it’s not that I really need more time, I just need to use the time that I have more wisely. So I’ve made a promise to myself that dealing with time traps and using my time more effectively will now be a priority.

So what are the types of time traps that we can fall into:

Not being able to say no

Whether it be at work or at home, it’s incredibly easy to get sucked into taking on too much because you’re unable to say no. Don’t try and be all things to all people. Sometimes you just have to be brave enough to say no.

Taking on too much

Are you the sort of person who just wants to cram as much as you can into every waking hour? If you are then beware. This is not always the most effective way to function and you could just be piling unnecessary stress on yourself. There’s nothing wrong in pushing or stretching yourself – but be realistic about what you can and can’t do.

Being disorganised

Some people may take organisation to extremes, but if you’re one of those people who wastes times because of lack of organisation, then now is the time to do something about it. You may find it a challenge to be organised but there are a lot of tools that can help you. Find them and use them.

Failing to prioritise

An awful lot of time can be wasted if you don’t prioritise tasks and activities in your life. Schedule, use to do lists, it’s up to you as long as you have a clear idea of what needs to be done and when. Failing to prioritise is one of the biggest time traps you can fall into.

Thinking there’ s nothing that can be done

Are you one of those people who is always short of time and believes there’s nothing you can do about it? Sorry, but this is nonsense. Managing your time is about making choices. If you believe there’s nothing you can do this is a huge time trap to fall into because you will just stay stuck in the same position.

Summary

These are just 5 examples of time traps that you can fall into. Whether any of these resonate with you or not, think about your own time traps and see what you can do about them. Time is too precious not to use it effectively. You can read more ideas at my coaching blog.

Nice one, Bev. At some time we all will have experienced these and it is good to step back and look at your work routine from this perspective. Sometimes we get so close to the work we cannot see what's going on (or not) as the case may be, Regards Keith

Thanks Keith. We certainly do get caught with a huge variety of time traps. You're so right - sometimes one just needs to step back. Must remind myself to do that a little more often!
