1-Importance of Time

George Bernard Shaw once said "Everything happens to everybody sooner or later if there is time enough. Time is a very limited and scarce resource.

With our current lifestyles and working conditions, we notice the world is moving in a very fast pace. A 24 hour-day is getting shorter, and we become unable, in most cases, to accomplish what we want to do in any given day. This creates the necessity to manage time effectively.

2-What is Time Management?

It is about setting priorities according to limited available time. It is about how to accomplish things in any given time. Benjamin Franklin had said: ”You may delay, but time will not.” Time management is about tools that increase productivity. It was originally viewed as important only for business or work environment, but now it became comprehensive to include all personal and even leisure activities. This current view has made time management more important in our lives. As Peter Drucker, the top management expert, had said " Time is the scarcest resource and unless it is managed nothing else can be managed."

Current research shows that almost third of American working adults sleep less than 6 hours a night and that they did not have enough time to complete their work tasks. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics, published 2011 figures for average American persons ages 25-54, and these figures show time spent per day as follows: work=8.8 Hours, sleep= 7.6 Hours, leisure & sports=2.5 Hours, care for others=1.2 Hour, household activities=1.1 Hour, eat & drink=1.1 Hour, and other activities=1.7 Hour. These statistics show that average American adult has little time for anything else besides work and sleeping.

Productivity is now linked to efficient time management. According to a study by UCLA & University of Minnesota, executives spend an average of 40-50% of their working hours in meetings, and up to 50% of these meetings are unproductive. Another study shows that worker burnout rate averaged 32% because of lack of time to complete various work tasks.

Time management is becoming increasingly important in our lives. We can learn and use its tools, and we can begin today. As Mother Teresa said “Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet come. We have only today. Let us begin.”
