How Can You Manage Your Time To Forge Ahead In Life?

Time is money, they say. And money plays a non-negligible part in succeeding in life. So that saying encapsulates the importance of managing your time if you want to succeed in life. This article will teach you how to manage your time to advance in life. And at the end you will do an exercise in goal setting.

When you’re 20, you think age 40 is too far away to worry about and as for 60 that might take eternity to come. Yet when you turn 40, you wonder how fast time flew and at 60 you only look back with regret at “all those squandered years”. Yet that shouldn’t be so. The solution is called “goal-setting”.

The only way to living happily and feeling fulfilled at the end of the day is to set goals for your life.

If you’ve never set goals in your life, the idea of doing so might appear preposterous to you. But why is it important to set goals for your life?

Despite the elephant being bigger and heavier than a person, engineers have determined that the pressure per square inch is greater from a woman’s single spiked heel than from an elephant’s foot! This is because while the woman’s weight is focused in that tiny spike, the elephant’s is spread out (diffused). The sun’s rays don’t normally start fires, do they? But focus that ray through a magnifying glass and it’ll burn a piece of paper!

Those are examples of the power of focus.

When you concentrate all your energy, creativity, power and effort on achieving a very specific goal, you are leveraging focus.

How to let goals work for you

Goal-setting first forces you to focus your thoughts, then your resources and finally your actions to achieve a desired end.

Just as in the other articles, you’d set your goals at the end of this one. It starts with LONG-RANGE GOAL IDEAS, for 3-5 years, spread over the following 8 categories of living:

1. Careers

2. Money

3. Social –friendships

4. Love relationships – family

5. Physical – health

6. Mental – intellectual

7. Spiritual – philosophical

8. Recreation – fun.

Next come MEDIUM-RANGE GOALS, for 1 to 3 years. Then SHORT-RANGE GOALS, for 3 to 12 months. To finish, you’d write down GOALS for “THIS MONTH,” that is, what you can do starting right from this month to steer you in the direction of your overall goals.

How to control the way you use your time with goals

Since your youth, your time has been managed for you. You were made to spend hours at school and a certain number also at work. Commuting, eating, sleeping, all take time. When you put all these together, maybe the time left for yourself is 5 or 6 hours a day. This is the time you control, so let’s call it “YOUR TIME.”

At the end of a month, a year, many people can’t show any desired changes in any category of living using this “YOUR TIME.” They just let it slip away, spent, wasted, gone forever!

And often you let others determine how to spend “YOUR TIME.” A friend drops by and says, “Let’s go for a beer,” and you say, “Yeah.” There’s nothing wrong with that. But letting friends spend “YOUR TIME” for you, impulsively, haphazardly, can only ultimately leave you bitter with lack of progress in your life.

Yet you could “invest” some of this “YOUR TIME” to advance your goals in your chosen positive directions. When you “spend” “YOUR TIME,” you have nothing to show for it but when you “invest” it, it yields fruit. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t “spend” “YOUR TIME” but only that it would be wise to “invest” some of it.

The magic power of investing just 1 hour a day

Earl Nightingale, a foremost authority on human potential and self-improvement, estimated that if a person used just one hour a day on a pursuit (a subject or skill), they would be a world class expert in it in less than three years.

Imagine watching videos in the French language, studying the language in books, from audio-cassettes, reading French newspapers and magazines, listening to programmes in French on the radio and watching them on the TV and the internet, and practising it for an hour every day for three years, you’d probably speak French like a native.

How is an elephant eaten?

“How do you eat an elephant?” Since finding this expression in the ICS guide, I have been using it to encourage my students to perform better at their studies. No matter the improvement you are seeking in your life, just one hour a day will bring the desired results. For the way you eat an apple is the same way you eat an elephant, that is, bite by bite.

Even the highly successful affiliate marketing training program offered by Wealthy Affiliate is also structured on this principle. By following the series of lessons, each requiring not more than an hour at a time or even less, you acquire high quality training for an entirely new, exciting, profitable online career, right from the comfort and the convenience of your own home. More details on this in the last series.

The unforgettable experience of a “Productive Day”

You have a “productive day” when, at the end of the day:

1. you can see, feel and know that you have done and achieved something of value

2. you can see, feel and know that you have done something that has inched you closer to one of your important goals

3. you can say that you have learned something new, something you didn’t know before.

Instead of a productive day, what do we have? Unproductive days when you wake up, eat, go through the day, watch TV, maybe surf on the net, eat, go to bed and wake up again to repeat the same humdrum routine. Day after day. Month after month. Year after year. All the rest of your life. Try having productive days for a month and you’ll know how powerful it is.

The $25,000 “secret” to having a “productive day” every day

During the American Industrial Revolution, Charles Schwab, the top executive running Andrew Carnegie’s steel mills asked a consultant, Ivy Lee, to help him improve productivity in the mills and in his own life.

Ivy asked Charles to write down each night the ten most important things he wanted done the next day, listed in order of importance. Charles was advised to go to the next item only when he had the current one accomplished and checked off. Ivy had asked Charles to try his idea for a month and pay him whatever he thought was worth it. And at the end of that period, Charles gave Ivy a check for $25,000!

Why not give this a try? Just treat yourself to a sumptuous dinner when it works for you after 30 days!

It’s now time for practice.

Street Talk

You're right. Goal setting is powerful stuff! Interesting examples, that an elephant's weight spread out over big feet puts less pressure than a woman's spiked heel! Good way to get the points across.
