How Not to Be Distracted By Your Email And Instant Messaging Device

Text messaging and instant messaging device is known to be widely used by most people below fifty (50) which is the age of active work, service and innovations.

It is quite sad to know that a lot of people find it difficult to leave their text messaging or instant messaging device to complete a day’s job, meet up with important schedules and set their priorities straight.

The question is, how do we tackle this problem? I do not think there is a direct solution that is going to be liberal, but this is how I manage my own work with instant messaging and emailing at work and it has worked for me and for those whom I have shared it with.

Turn the phone on silent

It is far better to turn your phone on silent than to turn it off; it just gives people the impression that you are busy.

If your phone has a status or personal message box, you can write that you are busy there and then give a specific time to call back.

Turn off the LED Light indicator

If you turn off the LED light indicator, you would not be distracted any time you look at your phone because you will always have the urge to check for any message on your phone once the light indicator is on.

But there are exceptions though, like sometimes if you are expecting an important message that has to do with your work or something serious at home,

there are phone applications for special LED lights for a specific person in most cases this applications allow you to customize your light for specific persons or reason.

For example if you have a nanny who takes care of your kids while you are at work.

In this way you can know who is pinging you, without holding your phone. And besides that, it helps you safe a lot of battery.

Fix a specific time for answering your messages

Answering your messages on specific times helps you to put order into your work and also tells others that you have a special time you attend to messages and that is why I said in the first point, that when you turn your phone on silent, you have to leave a message that says something like I’m having a busy day but will reply back during my lunch time.

And very soon people will get to understand you and even wait till your fix time to ping you or to remind you of something they want you to do for them.

Reply all messages

Try to reply all messages at least most that are reasonable, it’s only an act of courtesy and mutual respect, also this will encourage people to send you important messages not junks and keep them at breast of your free time.

It might be difficult to follow these points at first but after some time it becomes part of you. Judging from my own point of view, I think it is a very good strategy for someone who does not want to waste his time and be productive.
