Time Management at Home

Do you ever wish that you had better time management at home? I do. Yes I can be very organised and focussed, but I still think there is much room for improvement. I have to work very hard not to be distracted or stop myself from taking multi-tasking to ridiculous levels. I often write an article, watch a television programme, chat on skype in between updating my to do list or sending out tweets. Believe me, I know this is not something to be admired, but I recognise, whatever excuses I make for doing this, it’s actually about the choices I make about how I organise my time.

This idea of time management choices was brought home to me today when I was reading one of those weekly gossip magazines. I’d like to say I was sitting in a Drs waiting room – and picked it up to read, but no I’m afraid it was mine and I bought it. It’s one of those odd guilty pleasures and I enjoyed 20 minutes soaking in the bath reading through a mixture of celebrity and real-life features. Of course I take 99% of what’s written with a large degree of scepticism. After all there’s nothing like reading lots of articles with “sources say...” to justify the nonsense they’re spewing out. Besides in one of the magazines they were holding up Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise as an example of marital bliss in the week they announced the end of their marriage. However, they do give me plenty of source of inspiration for issues related to my speciality. (That’s my excuse anyway!)

Today I was reading about one unnamed star who had been interviewed and said that her children had asked her not to keep taking them out in her pyjamas. She said that it was just so difficult to manage in the mornings with 2 young children. I’m sorry – I remembered back to my mother who at one time had 5 children under the age of 8, had no help and wouldn’t have dreamt of walking us to school in her pyjamas. ‘ 'Where’s your organisation woman?’' – was what I thought quickly brushing over my own lapses of poor organisation and time management. But in all honesty although we might pretend otherwise we can choose how we manage our time at home and with a little thought we can make changes to improve it.

Here are 7 tips for improving your time management at home

1. Make sure everyone is doing their fair share ofchores, including children, unless of course you’re a single household.

2. Keep a diary of calendar visible to everyone in the household so you know where everyone is at a given time and can identify potential clashes ahead of time.

3. If your house needs organising or tidying up – make the time to do so – you will save time in the long run. Spending time searching for stuff is stressful and a waste of time.

4. Complete tasks in blocks of time eg – online taks - banking, shopping, dealing with emails, sorting washing and putting it away immediately, cooking and freezing meals

5. Multi-task in a sensible way eg you can do another job when food is cooking. Or if you are doing a task outside of the home – what else could you do at the same time. Plan it.

6. Always start tomorrow today – eg get things ready for the next day the night before.

7. Don’t make excuses. Allocate you’re time wisely – if you need more sleep – make a commitment to get to bed half an hour earlier each night. If you want more time to do something, make the decision to get up half an hour earlier in the morning.

Remember if you want to improve your time management at home, it’s all about the choices you make. You can find some tips for making the most of your time on my coaching blog.
