Tips on Time Management for Dippers

Are you the type of person who likes to have multiple hobbies or projects on the go? I admit I am and if I’m not careful it can lead to me over-stretching myself and then finding that my stress levels are rising because I have lots of half finished projects. That’s why I decided to write these tips on time management for ‘dippers’ so that you can manage your time effectively and still enjoy having multiple projects on the go.

Now many people might argue that you should just focus on one or two projects but if you’re a serial dipper, this will take you so far out of your comfort zone that you’ll probably fail at the first post. So it’s really important that you find a middle ground that works for you and allows you to manage a number of projects or hobbies but also ensure that you complete them.

Divide up your day

It’s been said a million times before, but however you look at it there are only 24 hrs in a day and as much as you might wish for more time, it’s obviously never going to happen. So it’s important that you identify all the things that you do such as work, sleeping, eating, family commitments, socialising and so on.

Only you can decide how much time you already have committed and how much time that leaves you. However much it is, be honest. If it’s only two hours a day – so be it. The amount of time doesn’t matter, it’s how you use it that counts.

Choose 1 or 2 key projects

Okay, there’s no getting away from it you do need to choose one or two key projects. Don’t panic you can still do some dipping. But it’s important that you identify one or two key things to work on which are really important to you. It may be that one is a long term project and another short term.

Allocate time to your projects and time to your dipping

If you’ve decided you have two hours a day – allocate time to your key projects and time to dipping. You might want to do an hour on each or just half an hour on the dipping. Again it’s up to you and it depends how much time you actually have.

Project time

During the time you spend working on your projects you will be very focussed, have a clear idea of your goals and timeframe for completion. However, much you get the urge to do something else, don’t allow yourself to be distracted. You know that you’ll be able to do whatever you want during your dipping time.

Enjoy your dipping time

Your dipping time can be used exactly how you want. It can be as unstructured or structured as you want, but it’s the time you allow yourself to dip in and out of your other projects. I like to spend time in the evenings ‘dipping’ and I often spend up to three hours working on multiple projects. I don’t plan what I’m going to do and it will vary from one evening to another.

Sometimes I don’t dip and I stick to one thing for the allocated time and other days I do several things.

Why it works

By having specific project time and ‘dipping time’ you will find that you complete projects more quickly and yet you can indulge your wish to have multiple things on the go at once. It requires you to be disciplined and not let you dipping time to encroach on your project time. So if you’re a serial dipper who struggles to finish things, give this a go.
