Books on procrastination come in an endless supply. Last time I checked on Amazon over 1200 search results came up. At least the authors seem not to suffer from procrastination. But this huge amount of books on this topic should also set off the alarm bells ringing.
And here is another tell tale. Do this book search on Amazon with "procrastination" as the search term. Pick one of the popular results and then scroll down to the section called 'Customers who bought this also bought....'. And what do you find? Yep, even more books on ending procrastination. I mean, if you already bought the best book on overcoming procrastination, why would you need to buy another one? And another one? And...
Clearly these books are not the solution you are looking for. And there are several important reasons why they fail to provide any real help.
Most books simply can not tell the true causes from the symptoms
Most books fail to see, let alone understand, that procrastination is not the problem. In fact procrastination is the solution. It is your solution for a problem you are facing now. Granted, it is a poor solution but when you truly understand this, it will instantly become clear that procrastination is a symptom of an underlying problem. Fail to see this and you will come up with solutions that address the symptom and leave the real problem festering underground.
That is also the reason why all those time management tips and solutions fail so horribly. They address the symptom and not the true cause.
Working with just a book does not provide you with the right feedback structure
And even if a book gets it right and does see procrastination as the symptom of an underlying problem, then still your chances of success are very, very slim. The very nature of procrastination is to avoid looking at what is really going on. It is not that you do not want to, but once that procrastination pattern is triggered, you simply run on auto pilot. And you run in any direction but the right one.
A book simply does not have the eyes, voice, arms and legs to stop you dead in your tracks when that procrastination pattern gets triggered. This is also the reason why most books on procrastination end up on the bookshelf, unread and in pristine condition. Want to laugh? Do that same search on Amazon again, pick a popular title and notice how many second hand, in new condition, versions are offered.
But what does help then?
Well, what has eyes, a voice, arms, legs and knows when to intervene to keep you on track and helps you to get to the core of your procrastination pattern? The Implementation Coach of course! I will tell you about him in a next article or head on over to Procrastination Ends Right Here if you can't wait that long and want to end that procrastination habit right now!
Oh, and overcoming procrastination is way easier than you might think...
Soon, Bryan
