Spring And Summer Fun In Courchevel

As one of the best-known ski regions in the French Alps, the area around Courchevel, in the Three Valleys Region, is a fabulous place to go at any time of the year. Although the area is most famous for its excellent skiing and other winter sports, it also has plenty of reasons to book in to the catered ski chalets in the warmer months of the year.

Developed in the post World War II years, the resort is unique in France as it was built from scratch (not around an existing village). The wide array of catered ski chalets and great restaurants and nightlife appeals to a host of visitors every year, and the spring and summer months offer many things for the adventurous traveller.

If you are one of those people who looks out the window at a mountain face and thinks, "I want to climb that", coming to Courchevel in the warmer months is ideal as the climbing opportunities are outstanding. Although it is not world-famous for these kinds of pursuits, there are plenty of challenging trails and hikes to keep you occupied.

If the idea of dangling off a cliff face doesn't appeal to you, you can traverse the famous Via Ferrata, which is a path up the mountain combining ropes, bars, grips and sometimes even bridges. If it’s your first go, try your hand at Lac de la Rosiere, but if you are more advanced there are plenty more challenging mountains to conquer.

You may not know it, but biking in the region around Courchevel is a pretty big deal. Up and down the mountains, around hairpin turns and down through deep valleys, the roads here offer a true challenge, with the added bonus of spectacular views. A stay in any of the local catered ski chalets will afford plenty of opportunities to explore the region on two wheels. You can bring your own bike, rent one and go solo, or book on to a guided tour. There are myriad routes to try, of varying skill levels and, even in the summer months, the lift system can get you around easily if you don’t feel up to cycling all the way.

Of course, if you're a hard-core skier, you don’t have to pack your skis away entirely when you stay in one of the catered ski chalets in the warmer months. If you head up to the highest peaks in the Vanoise National Park you will find both manned and unmanned pistes available all year round.

Danielle Hodges is the Marketing Manager for Ski Amis, a specialist ski travel agency and booking service offering bonded holidays staying in catered or self catered ski chalets in La Tania and other fantastic destinations. For a luxury or good-value skiing holiday and the best catered chalets call Ski Amis.
