Modern Drills - What You Should Know

Drills used to be a simple tool made of pointed stone spun between hands. Then, as the needs for such tool increases, new types of drills were invented. Some uses human power, others uses the wind or water.

But as we enter the 20th century, we build upon the electric motor made by two Australian in the 1880s and change the design from long, rod with a handle to a pistol like design.

That’s where the interesting thing starts – when drills no longer use human power but electrical power.

1. Corded Electric Powered Drill

The corded electrical power drill was introduced in 1895 by a German company in Stuttgart. This comes during a time when electricity is becoming cheaper and more and more home appliances turn to electricity for power.

All you need to create holes now is an electrical outlet to link electrical power to your powerful drill. No electrical outlet nearby? No problem. Use an extension cord.

Although the wires could be cumbersome and increases the chances of an accident (from tripping or electrocution during bathroom work), the idea of using an old-school hand drill to replace the electric drill never cross the minds of modern home owners. Why? Because it takes far longer for most of us to drill with our hands than to deal with the extension cord of an electric drill.

But again, as technology advances, a new type of drill that still uses electricity, but now drawing the power from batteries are becoming the new trend. They are called the cordless drills.

2. Cordless Drills

The cordless drill is a trade-off between the traditional hand drill and an electric drill. It might not be as powerful as an electric drill, but it offers the portability of a hand drill.

Instead of drawing electricity from AC current from your electrical socket, these new cordless drills draw power from batteries. The earlier type of cordless drill uses Ni-Cadmium batteries, but the newer ones uses the Li-Ion batteries which are lighter, greener, do not get heated when charged and lasts longer.

The cheaper version of these drills come with only one battery, so when your battery is dead, so is your tool. But the better, more expensive version of the drills comes with two batteries and a fast charging battery charger. This way you could go to work with a fresh new battery while the battery that is out of juice is being recharged.

But the good news is these tools seem to pack more power each year as new models are being introduced. They are up to 18v now, which means enough power for most home owner’s needs.

Not only they offer you the convenience of working anywhere, but with features such as clutches, variable speed and keyless chunks, these cordless drills are the hallmark of versatility and ease of use.

The old days of using your camel, the wind or your own two hands to manually rotate your drill to bore holes is over. You and I are now entering a new, exciting age where physical strength is no longer a crucial factor when it comes to do it yourself projects.

We are in the age where almost everything will be wireless. And that includes your power tools such as a drill.
