The 6 Amp Chicago Electric Drill That Snapped In Half

I had purchased a Chicago Electric drill from Harbor Freight. I do like a lot of the tools from Harbor Freight, and you can't beat the prices. I had picked up this Chicago electric 6 amp half inch drill, because the body reminded me of my Milwakee magnum drill. I have to admit that I did get my moneys worth out of this drill, but it was no where close to the Milwakee. It makes sense though, you can't pit a $20 drill against a $200 drill. Here's what happened.

I was drilling a dryer vent 4 inch hole through the siding and banner board of a home. I admit that this is a bit much for even a 6 amp drill, and I should have been using a D handle drill. I use my Milwakee magnum for this kind of thing all the time, and it has less amps. Since the frame of the Chicago electric looked similar I grabbed it for the job. I had used the Chicago drill for couple of other jobs, so it had already paid for itself. The trigger action is a bit choppy on this drill though. It makes it kind of dangerous. It has a lot of torque, which actually destroyed itself. I was easing through the siding and the hole saw caught on the sheathing. I had a strong grip on the drill, because they can break your wrist. They're that powerful.

The 4 inch hole saw, that was attached to the Chicago electric drill, caught on the sheathing. The reason it caught so hard is because the drill lacks the fine ability to control the speed of the drill. When the drill caught it jerked so hard that it actually tore the handle right off of the drill. The handle snapped right off in my grip. You could see the drill spinning in the side of the house without a handle. It wiggled and threw itself out of the incomplete hole.

I like to try out new tools, just because I'm always using them. I picked up this Chicago electric drill because I liked the design, but that's about all. The choppy trigger mixed with the brittle plastic, made for a dangerous tool. I do admit I was using it beyond it's recommended usage, but I use my Milwakee magnum for those applications all the time. Like I said earlier it's just not fair to pit those two drills against each other. Even though the design is slightly similar they are two completely different drills. I did get my money back from this drill, but I doubt I'll use another Chicago Electric drill again.
