Just how many different ways are there for kids to get around on two wheels? Well, as of very recently, there is one more. Not only is it a really cool concept, it has a great catchy name as well.
Have you discovered the Zike yet? No - well then you could be in for a treat. The Zike is a two-wheel means of transport that is like a three-way cross between a bike, a scooter and an elliptical trainer.
(Just what sort of mind comes up with an idea like this - I am full of admiration!)
Like a bike, it has pedals and brakes, but you stand up on it, as if you were on a scooter and the action to propel it along is similar to the action on a trainer. But you do actually move along the ground.
In fact, you can move along quite fast, so you might well be very glad of the brakes.
In other words you could say it is an exercise machine that you can go outside on, or a toy that will keep you fit. What an innovation!
The Zike comes in four different sized models each larger one suitable for a slightly heavier and older rider. Of course the price you pay increases, along side the stronger design. This is not at all surprising, when you see the amount of technology in these machines.
The Zike is the brain child of company founder Nathan Scolari. In an effort to combat the childhood obesity epidemic in the United States, he spent years researching and designing it. What he eventually came up with is geared for children, to enable them to exercise and have fun at the same time.
I believe he has really succeeded; from the wonderful design to the great colors, the Zike is evidently going to be a successful product. This much was clear, right from its unveiling at the New York toy fair in spring, where the Zike stand was almost overwhelmed by the amount of interest it attracted.
Bicycles have hardly changed in the last 100 years but Nate’s invention, which has led to the filing of 34 patents, has strong green credentials and is showing the way in the fight against childhood obesity.
The Zike company has many more human powered vehicles up its Greenville-based sleeve and the company's goal is to 'make a positive difference in people’s lives'.
In keeping with Scolari’s concept of making a quality machine, his original intention was to manufacture in the US. But he found that to do so would cost him three times as much as producing in China. So, as is often the case, cost won out, because the Zike would have simply cost more than people would be prepared to pay.
In order to make sure that the product remains at a high quality, he and his team make frequent visits to his China plant, to check up on production. He said, "It is hard to compete with China, but it is still our hope and our passion to create and then build in America".
With this ambition, I do wish him all the best of luck. So far the response from the public has been extremely positive and it looks like Zike could have a series of winners on its hands.
