Where Is Carcassonne? What Game Are You Playing?

Look at what can happen when modern German thinking gets to work on a French historical city. The result is a fascinating new strategy board game called Carcassonne. One fanatic is quoted as saying that it is an uncommonly good idea for a game, with the advantage that a session can be completed within a reasonable amount of time.

This game can be thought of as truly European, it was developed in Germany, but it is named after the southern French city of Carcassonne. This ancient city is well known for its unique Roman and Medieval fortifications. The pictures on the box feature typical style castle buildings from those important periods of the dim and distant past.

The city of Carcassonne has been lived in and fought over for centuries, so, like many parts of old Europe, it is full of interesting history. Many of these important events from the past can be included in the well thought-out extensions, which are available to increase the scope of the basic game.

As is usual, the aim of the game is to collect points and the players do this by developing the area around Carcassonne, using the tiles. With them, they locate features like farms, fields, roads, cities and cloisters.

As the tiles are laid down, the player, who has seven followers, sites his followers in different features, in the hope of collecting points for these, once they are are completed.

An unclaimed feature is claimed by placing one of your characters on the tile, and you get points for each completed feature. Once sited, the character, or 'meeple', is fixed in place for the whole game.

A particularly interesting aspect of this game is that the playing area never looks the same from one game to the next, so there is a real feeling of developing an area, by connecting roads and building cities.

No one is ever knocked out of the game, which continues until everyone's tiles have been used up. Each player's points are then added up, to find out who is the winner.

The game actually ends once the last tile has been put in place, then, all features score points for the players with the most followers on them. Naturally, the player with the most points wins the game.

As people become better players of Carcassonne, then is the time to add one of the great range of extensions which are available. Each of these extensions has a specific theme; bridges, castles, rivers etc., which increase the scope of the game by being connected to the tiles in the original, core version of the game.

The game of Carcassonne is quite easy to learn and play. It can also be relatively short and quick to finish. This will of course depend on the number of players, as well the added effects of any extensions which have been included.
