One of the biggest challenges in internet marketing is to get traffic to your website, not just any traffic but targeted traffic. In this article I'd like to share with you three primary ways to increase traffic to website: increasing traffic through SEO, through article marketing and through pay per click. There are a lot of hyped up products that make these incredible promises on how you get tons of traffic by just pushing a few buttons. I have not found this to be true in my experience. The fact is these three methods have worked consistently and still do, although with some changes on how to apply them. Internet marketers who are serious and in it for the long haul seem to be using these methods. So here's an overview of each one of these methods.

Increase traffic to website through search engine optimization (SEO)

This is where I would start. There is a lot that could be said about this method and it is beyond the scope of this article to do that but I would like to give you an overview of SEO. Ideally, even before you register your domain you want to do proper keyword research so that even in the domain name you have a term that is searched for often and has a low competition for other websites competing for that same term.

Even if you already have a domain name and you haven't done this you can still get more traffic by making your posts or pages (assuming you are using wordpress which I recommend) SEO friendly. You want to have at least one key word that is in your text at least 2-3% of the time (two or three times every hundred words). You want to have this same keyword in your title, in your headers, in the alt text of images. You also want to link your post or page to another post or page in your site (internal linking). All of this is called on page optimization.

You also need to do off page optimization. This means getting backlinks to your site through various means (article marketing, commenting on forums and blogs, social bookmarking)

Many think that article marketing is dead but it is not. There is still a lot of traffic that is generated through article marketing. The difference today is that in certain niches (perhaps most) you have to write more articles to see the same results you would see a few years ago. But article marketing is good not only to generate traffic directly from these but it also helps your SEO because it gives you good backlinks and helps your site be found by google quicker.

Increase traffic to website through pay per click (PPC)

Many perhaps have had their account banned by Google. But Google is not the only place you can do pay per click (though along with facebook it is the larger one). The good thing is that if you start with the first methods above (which are free apart from the domain and hosting of your site) you will benefit in two ways: you will have a site that is more ready to be accepted by pay per click networks and you will have focused on converting using free methods before you move on to a paid method.
