Using Physics To Dismiss A Traffic Ticket

As the adage goes, “an education is a terrible thing to waste.” Taking this literally, University of California, San Diego-based physicist Dmitri Krioukov, faced with a ticket for failing to stop at an intersection, decided to apply his years of physics training to fight his citation.

In his more than 2,000 word paper, Krioukov argues his innocence by using complex theories of advanced physics. Trains, as Krioukov points out, appear to be moving slowly at a distance, when in fact they could be moving very quickly. This is because “an observer measuring the speed of an object passing by measures not its actual linear velocity [but] the angular one”; more simply, the angle you are to an object affects your perception of its speed.

In his paper, “The Proof of Innocence,” Krioukov uses three points to support his claim: (1) constant linear deceleration and acceleration, (2) observation of view, and (3) constant linear speed.

Krioukov was (purportedly) cited for failing to come to a complete stop at a marked intersection, which is known as a “California stop.” These “half stops” are one of the leading causes of vehicle-to-pedestrian collisions. National statistics rate failing to come to a complete and safe stop at an intersection as a leading cause of injury to pedestrians at intersections.

A key premise to Krioukov’s argument was that a passing vehicle created an obstruction. Had that vehicle passed his at only 10 mph, even at a visible distance of 100 feet and perfectly perpendicular in angle, it would have taken less than 2 seconds for the obstruction to pass.

This means that if Krioukov had taken 2 additional seconds to pause at the intersection, he likely would have avoided being ticketed in the first place — thereby entirely avoiding the time and cost of fighting a citation in traffic court. Contesting a traffic ticket in person often means taking a day off work, waiting at the courthouse to see the judge, and speaking in front of a potentially large audience to offer your case — all of which are activities that many people find unfavorable.

If you’re faced with a traffic ticket, an online traffic school offers two advantages over dusting off your old college physics books and trudging down to the courthouse. First, you are typically eligible to receive a discount on your insurance premiums for completing the 4-6 hour course. Second, you can have most traffic tickets dismissed from your driving record, saving you money on increased insurance rates.
