Cruise Ship Terminal In The Bahamas #1

Nassau is the premier cruise ship destination in the Caribbean. It's estimated that by the end of 2012, arrivals should reach 2.4 million. Our increase has been so spectacular, that no other Caribbean destination comes close.

Spending a day at prince george dock is an enjoyable experience, the opportunity to sit and watch these colossal ship lay motionless, resting in their mooring, is quiet an event.

The lighthouse in its white coat, sits on the western side of hog Island, it still guard's the harbour, but its importance has diminished, with placement of more lights. The new container port lies to the west, beautiful white sandy beaches could be seen for miles, with hotels of diverse colours and shape, depicting an exotic tourist destination.

As we look toward paradise island, we see a magnificent pink frontage, a hotel with majestic beauty and luxury un-match, exhibiting the lost Greek city of Atlantis, being re-lived for all to see, touch and explore.

As the ship comes nearer, a pilot ship arrives, and the captain boards the cruise ship, where the captain hand over authority the ship, and instructs his third mate and quarter master to take instructions from the new captain, who guides it through the deep entrance of the harbour.

Once the ship reaches near the pier, a heaving line is toss to the stevedores; this thin line is then tied to the main rope, which is held to the mooring, which pulls the ship next to the protective fenders and bumpers.

While this process is in progress, visitors are serenade by cultural music, This tends to excite passengers who display their dance moves, an expected effect from the rhythmic beat.

The embarking and disembarking of passengers presents a difference facial expression, arriving passengers are joyful, they can't wait to get of the ship, with children displaying, agility of their youth, parents shouting, (slow down). The wish to visit, explore, mingle and spend a few dollars, are high on their agenda.

But as the ship lay silent, staff members begin the busy work of cleaning, disposing of garbage, restocking of supplies and repainting the exterior.

But it's now time to leave, and the once happy wide smiling faces are no more, you could tell that they don't want to leave, some are sad, but still others wave as the ship leaves the pier, then the harbour.

It is not long afterward that the only thing that you could see, is the smokestack of the giant that lay sleeping a few days ago, re-energized, combating the waves on their journey to the next leg of their vacation.

Have done a bit of cruising myself and always enjoy getting up early to see the ship come in to port. On occasion the captain will sound the horn and there is nothing like that deafening blast that hits you in the gut. Must go and book another one...
