Entertainment on the Road - Watch Netflix Outside The US

I travel quite a bit, and one huge misconception about traveling is that a lot of travel time is spent utterly and completely BORED. Yes, traveling can be very boring at times. How is this possible? Well, you've got to spend a lot of time waiting for busses, waiting in line, waiting for tickets, and waiting for people to show up. Unless you book a bunch of planes a head of time and have everything mapped out, you also have to spend a lot of times on trains and busses.

It's not like in the movies where you always run into some interesting people on the train and fall in love or go party together. Sometimes you have to spend 3 hours on a bus through Turkey with an old lady vomiting in a plastic baggy. Or you might have to pretend to sleep because some chatty British guy wants to dump his life experiences in your ear for two hours straight on the train from Guangzhou.

I've learned that being able to watch Netflix outside The US solves a lot of these problems. Netflix is an awesome site because they've got thousands of movies available for anyone with an internet connection, a smart phone or laptop, and a US IP address (I'll get to that part in a bit). Sure, you could buy lots of movies beforehand from iTunes (or wherever), store them all on your phone, and watch them that way, but that takes a lot of time and planning as well.

How do you know what mood you're going to be in? And what if the movie you start watching sucks? Or do you really want to watch those same movies that have been stored in your hard drive for the past year? Even if you switch movies when you get the chance, you've got to find a computer, wait for them to upload, and you're still at the mercy or the people you run into with movies in their hard drive.

The key here is that to watch Netflix outside The US you've got have an American IP. Normally, the IP address of your laptop or phone is tied to the country you're in. If you're in Germany, you have a German IP address. The same is true if you're in Brazil (Brazilian IP) or The Philippines (Filipino IP address). There are methods of changing the your IP address.

Though proxies are a popular way to unblock websites, most proxies won't work on Netflix. This is because your standard proxy server will actually show websites that it's a proxy, and some might even expose your real IP, completely messing up what you're trying to do.

Virtual private networks work much better. VPNs also are categorized under the title of "anonymous surfing" or "IP changing tools", but they're build and work much differently than proxies. There are a couple of reasons for this, but they're very technical. For the average international entertainment seeker, its enough to know that it works. You'll be able to choose your IP location, but to watch Netflix outside The US, you'll need a VPN server in The USA.

Signing up and signing in takes only a few minutes, and most services openly support the ability to access Netflix, so its not like you're being "sneaky", or "breaking the rules". You'll then be able to set up or access your already existing Netflix account from anywhere in the world, on any device that supports Netflix - including iOS and Android devices and Windows or Mac laptops. You'll never have to deal with being bored on your travels again.

This is great. I've always wanted to watch my favorite tv shows and they're usually restricted to US so I have to find other ways of seeing them. If this works for Netflix then it should work for Hulu as well.
