How To Stay Awake On Long Trips

Where will you go on your next road trip? Will you go to Dallas? Houston? New Orleans? Will you shop for the latest fashion trends? Perhaps you will find an item to add to a collection. You may even go to a Lady Gaga concert, where you will see a fabulous show and sing along to "Edge of Glory".

Some people can ride quietly for long periods of time. They look out the window and watch the traffic. They may write in a journal, brainstorming ideas for articles, short stories, or poetry. How will you stay awake during the trip? There are a number of things you can do.

One thing you can do, of course, is talk. Talk about where you are going and what you plan to do when you get there. Talk about projects you are currently working on. Talking is one way to keep both passengers and the driver alert and awake.

A second thing you can do to stay awake is play games. Playing games is common when young children are part of the group. You might play a game in which the children look for signs featuring words that begin with the letters of the alphabet. Going through all 26 letters of the alphabet should keep the children occupied and should allow you to cover some distance. You can also watch for vehicles of certain colors and count how many you see.

Singing is another thing you can do. Sing your favorite Top 40 songs, like "We Didn't Start the Fire" by Billy Joel. This song is about the people and events of 1949-1989. It is both catchy and educational and may get children interested in history when they otherwise might not be. If you do not know this song, you can sing other songs that you are more familiar with, like "On top of Spaghetti" or "Hakuna Matata", perhaps. Singing is a great way to stay awake. It is an activity that the whole group can be involved in.

If children are busy singing, they cannot ask, "Are we there yet?" or "When will we get there?" These questions often come up when children are bored, restless, or tired. Keep singing, and before you know it, you will reach your destination. Then you can get out of the vehicle, stretch your legs, grab your baggage, and go get settled in for the night.

Have a great trip. See the sights. Sing your heart out. Then, when you come home, be sure to pick up a souvenir so that you can remember your trip and how much fun you had.

All good ideas Hollie. I used to look for wildlife if riding.

I use a technique taught me by my Father went he drove with me. He never was involved in an accident and neither have I, it is simply to concentrate on your driving by talking to your self the whole time, when nearing a on ramp or off ramp the question you would ask your self is there any other traffic, if there is have they seen me should I slow should I speed up etc etc in other words you are mouthing (obviously to your self that others can't hear) what the brain should be doing every moment that you are behind the wheel. A simple thing that most of us do unconsciously but by talking to yourself, fatigue never creeps in.
