Today there are many kids living in the world with Down Syndrome, otherwise known as autism. In fact, according to the National Down Syndrome Society, it is so prevalent in the US that we record 1 case of autism in every 733 live births. Of course, that is not including the over 90% of all pregnancies that are terminated, owing to the diagnosis of Down syndrome. Giving the facts and greater risk of health complications associated with the disorder, are we to deny the potential autistic summer camps kids the fun of summer camps? Are there the right facilities for summer camps kids with autism? Well, I really don't think we should deny the autistic child the right to visit well-planned (special) summer camps which will help them develop mentally.

There are many options available when trying to help summer camps kids with Down syndrome. Good summer camps allow kids living with Down syndrome to practice independence so that they can develop physically and mentally. These summer camps kids with disabilities are usually given special therapeutic services. In addition, these summer camps kids are placed under an extra level of supervision and medical care for their all-round well being. So, it is not that summer camps are bad for them. Rather, I think it is the low quality of some summer camps, with no health facilities for autistic children that we should worry about!

However, it is not difficult to find good summer camps for children with disabilities. If you want to find a suitable summer camp that will give the right care and supervision for kids with Down Syndrome, then you will need to locate a special camp that caters for children with mental retardation. Such a camp is expected to be approved by the relevant government agencies.

Make sure you review the camp activities and other information before you decide. You can decide to allow the children only if the activities offered to the summer camps kids with autism are suitable enough. In addition, find out the level of supervision available in such camping environment. That way, you will be able to ascertain whether or not it is safe for an autistic child.

Many camps that cater for the needs of these special children charge a little extra compared to ordinary summer camps. However, financial help is always readily available for autistic summer camps kids who need it. In addition, even some well-meaning individuals in the society also donate money to cover all the expenses in some autistic summer camps. So, check if there are ways to reduce your camping expenses.

Once you have done a great job choosing the right services that cater well for summer camps kids with autism, you can go ahead to fill out the application form. Pay special attention to any treatment or medical requirements on the application form. I suggest you speak directly with the staff of the camp if you want the camp to fulfill any special medical needs outside of those children with Down syndrome usually experience. Without having to travel too far, you can as well check your area for any possible autistic summer camps kids’ centre for further information. I hope you find that helpful as well!
