Ten Reasons To Travel Solo
Join 1000's of Authors at StreetArticles Today!

I took a travel poll recently. Of the 20 people who answered the question “Do you usually travel solo or with others?” only three people (myself included) said mostly solo. The solo travellers are still in the minority but we are growing.

Though I do like travelling with others, I must admit going solo is fantastic. The single supplement, however, isn’t. I have to admit I find it “discriminatory”. Oh sure, I’m told companies will lose money only one occupies the room or cabins. Actually that’s totally bull since they pay their staff peanuts. If that’s the case then, make the hotel room or ship cabins smaller!

There is some advancement for solo travellers. For example the Norwegian cruise ship Epic has 128 single cabins, which is great.

I agree, travelling with others is fun as long as well before you leave, you’ve established a few things with your travelling companion(s). I’ve read horror stories about people who travel together that one set of circumstances turned into another then snowballed into more creating a bad trip.

But think about it. Think about the advantages of travelling solo.

10. You can eat wherever and whenever you want. There is no “So when do you want to eat?” “I don’t know, when do you want to eat?”

9. You don’t have to feel the need to always carry or have conversations. Sure, sometimes eating alone can be lonely. I’ve done it many of times. But I’ve also met people that I can dine with if I wanted to. Cruise ships are great for this. Then if you don’t particularly like your table mates, don’t go again.

8. You can sleep in or get up early.

7. You don’t have to rush for no one. Take that extra hour sitting at a cafe, sipping on a glass of wine watching the world go by.

6. You can hog the bathroom as long as you want.

5. You can meet new people easier if you want. Hence point number nine of dining alone.

4. You don’t have to listen to any complaints, which can bring your mood down. If someone doesn’t like something, you may never hear the end of it.

3. You don’t have to stick to any plans, unless you’re on a tour group of course. On my four day stay in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, I kept debating with myself if I wanted to catch the early bus to Montreal. It was the very last second decision to purchase the ticket and go.

2. You don’t have to worry if someone is having a good time or not, which can affect your holiday.

1. You don’t have to compromise. Ok, this point basically sums up a lot of these points. You can do what you want, when you want.
