VPN For China 2012 - Practically Impossible to Find What Really Works

I keep up on the "VPN for China" scene on the internet because I have a couple blogs on the subject. I live in China, and I blog about things like online privacy and internet censorship, so I see who's ranking where and what you can find on the internet. Google made some recent updates to the way they rank sites, and they've made it practically impossible to find what VPN for China really works. There are couple of things to consider.

China censors search results

Ok, so Google can't be blamed for this too much, but you'd think that they could make some accommodations for this. For example, the words "Facebook", "YouTube" and other keywords get you banned from Google temporarily due to the GFW. Now, if Google can alter search results based on country location (from IP address), couldn't they just turn up results without these keywords? For example, if a website contains the word "Facebook" in the URL, you cannot access it from Google search results. You can paste the URL into your browser window and access the site, but clicking on it directly from Google will get you banned from searching for a few minutes.

Google is showing blogs and news from 2009

OK! Facebook is blocked in China! You need a VPN in China! We know this already. So why is Google consistently showing Blog posts and news from 2009. It's now 2012 and we need fresh results. Even VPN review sites that were put up back in 2009 and 2011 are now outdated. Back in March 2012 there were a bunch of famous VPN sites that were blocked. OF course, a select few bloggers in China were able to keep up with the news and update our blogs to reflect these changes, but Google is still in love with those select few news sources who have NEVER BEEN TO CHINA. They're feeding second hand news from websites that jack their content from expats living here. We report it, they rank for it because they simply have stronger backing for their website.

Affiliates are promoting VPNs based on commissions, not on experience

I know this because I'm an affiliate myself. I do make commissions off of the VPNs I promote on my site, but at least I test them before I promote them. 4/5 top 10 VPN lists in China have at least half of their list blocked in China, and they don't even know it. Or they know it and don't care. A lot of these sites implement a kind of general "VPN Matrix" to insert for each blog posts and don't really pay attention to what really works or not. Luckily I live here and am able to post about VPNs that actually work, not just the ones that pay most.

It's perfectly possible that Google will eventually start paying attention to their search results in the largest country in the world, but for now, most curious expats are stuck with Yahoo! Answers, Wikipedia, and Foreign media as their source for information. The people behind The GFW (Great Firewall), who know which VPN for China isn't blocked get shuffled back to page 20 of Google's search engine results pages.
