91 Year Old Runs More Than Forty Triathlons, No Intention Of Stopping

At an age when most men are looking for a quiet, retirement activity, Arthur Gilbert took up a new activity. He was heading for seventy when he decided to take up running. Gilbert did not just jog down to the end of the lane, however, nor did he trot off to the local pub or the bingo hall. He was sixty eight years old and started running ultra events like biathlons and triathlons. And, during an early June weekend, Gilbert ran in his forty first triathlon, finishing that event in under three hours. He may have come in dead last, but Gilbert told the media afterward that if you are older than ninety, you are allowed to finish any event last.

Mr. Gilbert, from the UK, attributes his active life to a combination of a very positive attitude and his unending charity work. He also says that being happy in his daily life, eating a healthy, balance diet and regular checkups with his doctor also keep him running in tip top condition. Among his favorite foods are fruits and vegetables as well as nuts. He never drinks or smokes and gets plenty of stress relieving exercise and sleep every night. Gilbert stays in triathlon shape by biking at least twenty five miles every week and swimming fifty laps every day.

Mr. Gilbert doesn't just run for health and for fun, though. Most of the events that he has participated in are part of his charity work. He was awarded the MBE medal by Prince Charles in recognition of his passion for charity and good works. In addition, he was awarded another honor, that of the world's oldest triathlete, so named by the World Records Academy.

When asked about plans to stop running, Mr. Gilbert always says that he will after an event but then starts planning and training for another after he finishes. The June, event, the Burnham Spring Triathlon held in Somerset was his third attempt at a his "last" race, or so he says. He also told the media that he may never actually stop all running events until he absolutely has to do so because of his physical health.

In a world beset by stress, ill health and chronic obesity, one man is working to eliminate what he can from his own life, working to reduce personal stress, keep happy and busy as well as active and healthy. Maybe Albert Gilbert should become the personal hero of more people, all around the world.

Excellent article! With your permission, I would like to post your article on my website. As you may know, I recently left my 'brick and mortar' practice to open an 'online' wellness center. I have a FREE online education program entitled Brand New Day University. One of the components of this program is encouraging members to get up and 'move'. Many people have excuses as to why they 'can't' move. I hope this article will inspire them. Do I have your permission to post?
