The Skiing Catered Chalet Holiday

Over the years skiing has developed into a highly competitive sport. It features in the Winter Olympic in many formats e.g. Downhill, Slalom, Cross Country and many others. This gets good exposure with excellent TV coverage.

However there is another side to the sport which is hugely popular and that is ‘recreational skiing’. Skiers of all ages and all capabilities will ski all over snow covered mountains. Skiing is a great outdoor activity which is not only thoroughly enjoyable but a major contributor to keeping fit.

One of the attributes of recreation skiing is that it can be done as a family, not just the immediate family but a wider range. It is possible to have three generations or even four skiing together. It can range from an afternoon skiing together to a two week skiing holiday. When it comes to family skiing holidays there are many options available ranging from staying in a standard hotel to self catering to catered chalets.

One of the most enjoyable ways to spend a week skiing as a family group is to go on a catered chalet holiday. They are very popular in France, Switzerland and Italy. There are now some catered chalet holidays available in USA and Canada. The most common ones usually include:

Flight to the nearest airport to your chosen resort(and back at the end of the holiday)

Transfer from the airport to the chalet

Accommodation at the chalet

Breakfast

Afternoon snack as a welcome back from a day’s skiing

Dinner including wine

Most chalets are run by a couple, one generally managing the chalet, the other doing all the cooking. Some are actually very good cooks and so the dinners can be quite quite exotic. Also since they are undoubtedly good skiers they make themselves available to act as ski guides to the party.

One of the most memorable skiing holidays we had was when we took a chalet holiday in Meribel, France. There were ten of us made up of members of three families, only two generations.

Chalet Michelle was our catered chalet - a five bedroom chalet all with en suite bathrooms. Of the two people who ran the chalet one was sick so ‘Jim’ was left to run it on his own, which he somehow managed to do extremely well. Not only was Jim a top class skier he was an excellent chef and so we were treated to gourmet meals each night.

Each morning breakfast was served, sometimes bacon and egg sometimes just continental but with meats and cheeses. When we arrived back at the chalet in the afternoon waiting for us was bread, butter and cakes. For pre-dinner drinks we provided for ourselves. However once dinner started wine, both white and red was served. Not as you would expect top notch but certainly very drinkable. The cheese course extended dinner as long as we liked and the wine kept flowing.

On the Thursday of the week the chalet staff had a day off and we had to fend for ourselves. We like most other chalet holidayers had dinner at a nearby restaurant.

If you are interested in having a skiing chalet holiday my recommendation would be to Google ‘skiing chalet holiday’ together with the resort you would like to stay. There are many small specialist operators with good web sites where you can usually get some feedback from the comments and review section.
