Big On Luxury, Big On Space: The New Mercedes V - Class MPV

The Mercedes-Benz V-Class is a super spacious people-mover offering functionality and stylish attractiveness in the MPV segment that’s populated with rivals like the 2015 Toyota Alphard and Volkswagen T6.

The Mercedes-Benz V-Class is an MPV that rightly takes its place in the luxury Hong Kong auto scene, alongside the top-end sedans, estates and sports models. The Stuttgart-based automaker’s MPV models to grace Hong Kong car dealerships are the V-Class 250BT Long and V-Class 250BT Extra Long.

These are powered by the flagship V 250 BlueTEC diesel engine that produces 140 kW (190) hp, impressive torque of 440 Nm and acceleration of 9.1 m/s over the 0-100 km/h sprint and which meets the Euro 6 emissions standard.

From the exterior view, the Mercedes V-Class’s distinctive lines and clean, smooth surfaces give it poise and assurance in an impressive, desirable form. The expressive front section is defined by a two-louvre radiator trim and LED High Performance headlamps that lend this MPV its unmistakable appearance by day and by night. Large alloy wheels, available as 17 inch or 19 inch specs, add a sporty essence, while chrome trim elements make for that special touch of exterior class.

The 2015 Toyota Alphard features a more aerodynamic body shape, a new platform and increased body rigidity which along with enhanced soundproofing contribute to a luxurious, quiet and comfortable ride that Toyota claims to be befitting of a luxury vehicle. It describes the Alphard’s exterior appearance as ‘luxurious and valiant’.

In succeeding Volkswagen’s T5 commercial vehicles, the T6 says much about the automaker’s confidence in its 11-year-old T5s in that the T6 model range remains underpinned by the same architecture.

Mercedes is positioning the V-Class to those who appreciate a blend of functionality and attractiveness in their MPV. Families, for example, needing a stylish, spacious and comfortable vehicle for shuttling around in and in which to enjoy leisure time. It claims the generously-styled and spacious interior of its V-Class is the benchmark in the MPV segment both when it comes to ergonomics and visual high-class appeal.

Stuttgart affectionately terms the V-Class interior as a ‘well-being space’, and a space which comes with numerous equipment and material selection that is oriented towards the new Mercedes C-Class. Cabin appointments include the ambient lighting system with the three colour shades of neutral (white), solar (Bernstein colours) and polar (ice blue) to choose from, THERMOTRONIC automatic climate control and a heating air duct to the passenger compartment providing rear passengers with pleasant temperature-controlled air.

Seating comfort is given high priority in the V-Class, with swiveling and electrically adjustable Comfort front passenger and driver seats, active seat ventilation and seat heating (optional) for the front passenger and driver seats, and also 4-way lumbar support.

The standard Design interior package gives a sporty feel and includes Comfort seats in Lugano leather in black or crystal grey, nappa leather for the steering wheel and shift lever, trim elements in matt anthracite wave pattern or (optional) high-gloss black piano lacquer look and sports pedals in brushed aluminium.

The optional AVANTGARDE Design interior package offers extra attractiveness, with such features as leather covered armrests in the door panels, rear door paneling in black or silk beige, wood-look trim in high-gloss dark anthracite ebony or (optional) wood-look trim in high-gloss dark brown ash and the upper section of the instrument panel in leather look with decorative stitching.

The AVANTGARDE Exterior Sports package adds visual appeal to the V-Class from the outside, with 19 inch light-alloy wheels, brake callipers with Mercedes-Benz inscription, sports suspension and chrome insert on the bumper.

Enhancements to the inside of the Toyota Alphard include a standard LED roof illumination, with four brightness levels and 16 colour variations. There’s a Smart Entry & Push Start System with Welcome Power Slide Door & Reservation Lock function, the latter which can be set to automatically open the sliding door as one approaches the vehicle.

The Alphard’s improved Intelligent Clearance Sonar with Pre-collision System can automatically apply the brakes to mitigate low speed accidents, while a Panoramic View Monitor with See-through View function (which apparently gives a view of the vehicle’s surroundings as though it was transparent) help with parking manoeuvres. A Radar Cruise Control with All-speed Tracking function can be used to maintain a pre-set distance to the vehicle ahead between 0 to 100 km/h.

The Volkswagen T6 includes a new driver-assist technology to enhance active safety. Features include City Emergency Braking, Front Assist (autonomous emergency braking) and automatic post collision braking.

Space is a key factor with MPVs. The Mercedes V-Class’s variable seating concept offers versatility; four seats are standard in the rear, while optional three-seat bench seats for the first and second rows in the rear can increase seating for up to five or six passengers. Come the need for a particularly large load space and the rear seats can be completely removed thanks to a seat rail system with quick-release attachment.

The optional Table package adds even more versatility, with a folding, movable table that can be used for eating, working or playing games. Cup holders are located in the sidewalls and nets on the seat backrests provide more storage space. Mobile devices can connect and charge through a 12 V socket.

In the rear of the Volkswagen T6 is a clever folding table that can rotate eccentrically to serve passengers on either side of the cabin in the second and third-row seats. It can slide fore and aft on tracks located in the compartment’s centre. And all its seats and the table can be removed when the MPV needs to become a van.

The Mercedes V-Class is fitted with a range of safety and assistance systems including standard appointments such as the LED Intelligent Light System with adaptive headlamps that automatically adapt to the driving situation, ATTENTION ASSIST, Crosswind Assist, Parking package with reversing camera and airbags, thorax-pelvis sidebags and windowbags for the driver and front passenger.

Optionals include the PRE-SAFE® preventive occupant protection system that can identify potentially critical driving situations and initiate protective measures and Parking package with 360-degree camera.

Standard and optional multimedia and navigation systems in the V-Class include the Audio 20 CD with touchpad, Audio 20 USB, Burmester® surround sound system, COMAND with DVD drive, Garmin® MAP PILOT and Convenience Telephony.

The Mercedes V-Class’s 7G-TRONIC PLUS 7-speed automatic transmission allows the vehicle’s handling characteristics to be adjusted through four drive programs. For highly dynamic driving, the C, S and M programs deliver additional output and torque while in S program the transmission shifts up only at a higher engine speed.

With ride comfort in mind, there are three suspension variants. Comfort mode is designed to provide outstanding comfort in any driving situation, Sports mode delivers a high level of driving dynamics with racy characteristics and AGILITY CONTROL mode with its selective damping system adapts the damping characteristics to the road conditions and driving situation.
