Who doesn't know about Minecraft?
But this isn't about Minecraft, i'll get to that in a moment. Indie games are video games developed by a person or a small team, without any video game publisher for financial support.
It usually starts with a video gamer that is passionate about his ideas, and is motivated to put them in practice. That's why we have countless indie titles appearing out of thin air, each year, for the PC platform, sometimes downloadable for free, or for a small fee, something really great for a gamer that can't affort buying retail games priced at 60 bucks.
Now about this interesting platformer that i tried out about a hour ago.
It's called 'No Time To Explain', a violent and brutal 2D action-platfomer with charming visuals developed by Tiny Build Games, reminiscent of Meat Boy. Based around the concept of time travel, in this game you're a unnamed character, and you need to chase your future self, who has ben chaptured, but the plot itself is irrelevant once you dwelve into this game, because like Meat Boy, it is not a easy journey.
You'll die, pretty damn often, usually in funny ways that'll make you chuckle here and there, and thankfully there's a good checkpoint system in place so you wont rage quit. It's worth mentioning that there's no traditional death penality in place, but if you die repeatedly the face of your character will change from a normal one, to a slightly sad face, then angry, and eventually to a enraged demon-like face that'll make you go like "What the hell?".
What i really liked about this game is that it's ridiculously silly, i can see the developers pumped a lot of personality into it, there are trully bizzare environments in which you have to navigate through levels avoiding spikes and bottomless pits, action packed sequences in which you'll blast trough with your jetpack-gun (or whatever it's called), encouter bosses that are relatively easy to finish off, and ofcourse try not to die, because, wile portrayed in a funny way, it can be a tedious experience if you die over, and over again.
The game can be completed in hour or so, which is pretty damn long for a 2D action-platformer indie title, if i say so my self, though even better, the added content due to the bonus and user-made levels can prolong your experience with the game far beyond after you completed it, so this game has nothing to worry about wen it comes to content (now that i remember, so many big budget titles i've seen seem to rely more on bought DLC rather than packing up the game with decent content, which sucks to put it bluntly).
Overall, i recommend it to anyone that likes a silly, funny and entertaining 2D platformer to play around it. It may not reach Minecraft's level of success, but i really think it'll be a pretty big hit sooner than later.
Have a good one,
Luc.
