Internet Becoming the Viewers’ Choice For Television

It is no surprise that most people still watch their living room television set for most of their broadcast television needs. Even though that viewership has slightly declined since 2010 more than 80% of the television viewing population still turns on their television set to watch regularly scheduled broadcast. However for other programming, there is a new medium on the block--the Internet.

When it comes to recorded broadcasts however, the living room television is receiving real competition from the nearby laptop or desktop computer. According to a 2011 study conducted by Ericsson Consumer Labs 48% of the television viewing audience in 2011 watched recorded television broadcasts, slightly down from 53% 2010. Yet when compared to those who watch other types of video programming online those statistics are remarkably similar by comparison.

50 per cent of television and viewing audiences regularly watch YouTube video on a regular basis which is up 49% in 2010. This study based on the viewing habits of more than 350 million television viewers suggests that the Internet is quickly becoming the viewers’ choice for watching television. Even more telling, roughly a third of the population regularly watches streamed television programming, downloaded video content and even stream film productions and movies.

The same study indicated that even if people are watching television they are still simultaneously interacting with their computers. More than 60% of the population if knowledge that even when they are watching television they are surfing the web. More than 40% say that they are actively engaged in some social network such as Facebook or Twitter, while more than 30% of viewers say that they were involved in some other mode of communication online such as Skype or Facebook chat.

With the growing popularity of tablet, more and more viewers are watching television away from home. Tablet and laptop owners watch 4 to 6 hours of television on those devices when they are away from home more of them becoming comfortable with the concept of paying for it passing year. The percentages of viewers who are willing to pay for downloaded video content ranges in the 20th to 25th percentile in laptop, desktop, and television viewers respectively.

As the viewing trends have shifted, likewise the needs of the consumer have shifted. Viewers no longer need to be able to store the things that they like to watch, they just want to have it accessible to them when they want to watch it. However, Internet Television is not quite out of the woods yet. The public perception it seems, is that while the programming options may be limitless there are limitations in the capacity of the Internet to be an effective source for regular programming. It is possible, that the answer to this issue may well be found in building better bridges between the television and the computer. If we can provide the massive programming options of the Internet to the reliability and comfort of the living room television, then the possibilities are endless.

Today, the DVR can now go the way of the VHS and the Beta, the viewer need only to hit the power button and crank up the browser of their choice. So it seems that the winner of the next era in television will be the one who is able to translate for the viewing audience the experience, indeed the relationship that the public has enjoyed for nearly a century in television to their computers.

In steps Blaze Television Network. Launched in 2007, the Blaze Television Network is charting the course to provide a bridge between network television and Internet network television. The plan is to provide a relationship building experience through which viewers seek out network in search of original Internet television choices that cannot be found on network television but can easily be shared through the medium of the television console.

The concept is catching on as thousands of viewers and hundreds of members have joined the viewer and film submission membership since the Internet television networks inception nearly 5 years ago. The future is bright for those who are willing to weather the storm in the transition just as those who weathered the storm in the transition between radio and television are today considered to be the trailblazers and pioneers of yesterday.
