Do It Yourself Wedding Invitations : Helpful Tips For Setting Out to Design Your Own Wedding Invitations

When you set out to design your own invitations it's important to remember that there are many steps involved in getting to the finished product! The most important part of this process is to stay organized so you don't come unglued!

One way to stay organized is to think of yourself as a professional designer. So, if you were to meet with a pro, they'd have some questions for their client! You'd want to ask yourself these questions.

This is the single most important question: Give me three words that describe your vision for these pieces and your wedding day. (You should constantly remind yourself of these three words or concepts throughout all of your decision making and the design process.)

Next...

What pieces do you need designed? Or, given your resources, what pieces should we focus on?

What is most important to you- quality or cost effectiveness?

What are the three most important aspects of this project?

What is the budget for the pieces we will be designing, printing, and mailing?

What will the wedding look like? (Colors, season, decor, ambience, time of day, etc.)

Show me three to five examples of what you have in mind.

Describe what you like about each of the examples and why.

What colors do you like?

What information do you want to provide to your guests?

What are the correct names and spellings of each persons' name?

By when does the project need to be complete?

Then, a professional would keep a log of this information in an organized file folder (probably on their computer!) so you'll want to do the same. Here are some suggestions for ways to organize your project by folder:

Main Folder:

Wedding Invitations and Print Pieces

Subfolder:

Inspiration

Subfolder:

Design Program Files

Subfolder:

Test Prints

Subfolder:

Final Files to Print

Subfolder:

Tracking (this folder will include an excel document or tracking sheet where you can keep a log of your guest and mailing list with addresses, print pieces, quotes, costs, delivery dates, and confirmed RSVPs!)

Timing Tips:

Give yourself as much time as possible to brainstorm and create about what you really want in your invitations. A few months would be fantastic! And remember to account for things like ordering paper, test prints, potential corrections, and finally... mailing! Invitations should go out about 6 to 8 weeks before your wedding date, typically. It may take you longer to design your own wedding invitations than you think, so plan accordingly.

Next, you'll need some design tips!

Remember, less is more, especially when you're dealing with something as important and elegant as a wedding. Do it yourself wedding invitations should look like the real thing, or better! The last thing you want is to come off as cluttered or messy. Here are some tips to keep it classy!

1. Choose two colors max

2. Choose two fonts max. If you're going for a more elegant look, one font is plenty.

3. Choose one design element that you can use in all of your pieces, such as a particular flower, bird, or something that is special to you and your honey!

4. Check with your printer about bleed lines, crop marks, and file formats before you get started!

5. Keep it simple! Your guests need to have clear information so they know where to show up to support you on your big day!

Printing Tips:

You can always print at home, but when all is said and done it almost always ends up cheaper and looking much better when printing at a print house. Even your local Kinkos or Quick Print can do the job. You can request to bring in your own paper, or have them custom order some for you-- but be sure you have plenty of time for that!

Cost Saving Tips:

DIY invitations allow for maximum creativity and can often save a ton of cash. One thing you'll want to be aware of is postage costs! Remember you do need to supply postage for RSVP replies, so you may consider a telephone or electronic RSVP request.

In addition, the heavier the envelope, the more the postage will cost you. Keep that in mind when selecting specialty papers or including extra items.

Print your first test prints at home, on standard printer paper, in black and white. Once you're certain the design is final, print one or two color test prints before you sign off on the finished product. (Those need to be perfect, or it could cost a pretty penny to do a second run!)

Print everything at once. If you're printing a large order, a local printer may be willing to give you a discount. So, keep in mind that you may also need programs, menus, place cards, thank you cards, and more. And, it will feel good to have everything in one place!

Printing vs. Non printing:

Sometimes printing is important, and sometimes you may want to go green! We did that with our Save the Dates... To save the trees, at the same time. For some people, it will be important to have everything printed on paper, but if this isn't a priority for you, consider going green!

Good luck in designing your own invitations! Make them beautiful!
