Graphic Design

Journey

In my journey to become an Animator, I was advised to learn Graphic Design when I first entered college at Harding University. There was no animation program there. Their reason being that there are few jobs offered in it, especially in that geographical area of America. Graphic Design covers a very broad area in the world of art. That makes it hard to define. In general, graphic design involves advertising and promotion of businesses or individuals. The big hot spots for jobs are New York City, NY and Los Angeles, CA. There are also many opportunities across America, even branching into Broadcast Design, and especially Web Design.

It was only years after I had graduated Harding University that I learned to truly appreciate my graphic design studies. Graphic Design set a solid foundation for me that aided me greatly when it came to studying Animation.

Shortly after graduating from Harding in May 2003, I took a 3D Animation course during the summer of 2003 held at New York Film Academy at Harvard University in Cambridge, MA. That was an eye opening experience! The 3D Animation course taught students how to use Maya 4.5. Our teacher was an Animator from Europe who'd worked in the industry for 12 or 14 years. As I started learning how to use Maya, I realized the value of my graphic design skills. I was one of the few students who had an efficient approach to setting up my scene, figuring out my color scheme, lighting, and the general style of it all. Most of the other students were lost. This was our teacher's first time teaching so he also had a hard time conveying some things to us, and this was one of them. He finally told us to not worry too much if we didn't understand something. Just do what we could, get the animation, and scene done because that's what we needed to do to graduate.

After New York Film Academy, I finally made it to Savannah College of Art & Design where I again had to take perquisite Fine Art courses that were pretty much refreshers for me in the Fine Arts and Design.

Basics

When I first studied Graphic Design, everything began with the Fine Arts. This involved a lot of Drawing classes. Along the way I was able to take some cool classes such as Multimedia, Color Theory, Aesthetics, and intro graphic design courses that taught you how to use Photoshop, Illustrator, and Quark X Press. Later InDesign was promoted more over Quark X Press because more and more companies where starting to use it.

Multimedia is a course where you explore all the media outside of using graphite pencils and professional drawing pencils for drawing. In multimedia we got to use ink, pastels, colored pencils, construction paper, founded objects, etc.

Art History classes were also a big requirement. It's always good to know where you come from so that you can have some sense of direction you want to take for your future.

The Fine Art classes overall were great because they made me a trained Artist as oppose to me being a Naive Artist, someone with no formal training. Later on I ventured out into Painting. I fell in Love with Painting!!! If it weren't for my determination to become an Animator, I would've pursued Painting also. I just couldn't afford to do. Still I have a lot of painting equipment now which I plan on practicing much, much more if I can ever get a place of my own. In painting, I got to explore acrylic paints, oil paints, and watercolor! I also got to explore other areas outside of graphic design such as Ceramics and Printmaking.

Printmaking is what Graphic Design was before there were computers. I especially enjoyed using Lithography and the Aquatint technique to make prints. Screen Printing was fun! Creating wood cuts, doing etching, and using the intaglio technique where great experiences! Too bad I sucked at Printmaking. I had to work so hard in that class to produce a successful series of consistent prints. In the end my hard work alone is what saved me.

Ceramics, or pottery, is amazing. However, when I found out that the silica from the clay could eventually kill you, that made it impossible for me to feel comfortable doing it. Needless to say, I got injured in a car accident and that was the only thing that saved me from failing that class.

Having a curriculum that taught the Fine Arts first before I ever got too far into the computer side of it, helped me have a sense of direction by the time it came for me to learn the computer side of graphic design.

Graphic Design

As we moved onto the computers we were given tutorials that taught us how to use Photoshop, Illustrator, and Quark X Press. Later, we would also learn InDesign, Flash, and GoLive. It can take a lot of confidence to advance past this stage. We were also trained on Macintosh computers, so the Mac became the first computer I got comfortable using.

Outside of the computers we learned that the media of graphic design consists of ads, posters, logo design, post cards, note cards, stationary, book design, direct mail, flyers, ad campaigns, promotional packages, identity packages, designing CD to DVD covers, package design, newsletter designs, creating annual reports, magazines, and any other type of print media. Our studies involved Photography. We had to work in the Dark Room to process film. The great thing about the Photography class, I also took the Advanced Photography class, was that we got to use every type of camera ever made! Photography was good for Graphic Design because it teaches you about lighting, composition, use of color, and being aware of the mood.

Composition is a term in Graphic Design that means to set up the scene, and apply the principles in order to get a successful design. The Rule of Thirds is a principle that states that whenever we divide a scene into thirds, this roughly, is aesthetically beautiful or creates an interesting scene to look at. As this process will create an area of emphasis, this area is known as the Golden Mean. In your art work take careful consideration as you apply color, use values, scale, and so on. The subject of interest should also be off-center. In some cases, you want to also have perfect symmetry for certain subjects, as when you draw portraits. This again creates beauty. With lighting, we learned to use a 3 point lighting setup with camera and lighting equipment in Photography. These are some of the basics and principles that I was taught. It's a good idea to explore these subjects on your own, or ask your professor questions about them if you're ever taking a Graphic Design related course and you don't understand something.

Also, good presentation skills are essential to the Graphic Designer. Presentation skills involves being able to cut mat board and foam core into a picture frame that is used to mount your work. For business presentations, you can just use a mat board, cut out the proper size that will frame the ad, or whatever graphic design media it is, and use a spray glue to stick the media onto the mat. Two big saying in Graphic Design are, "Work Smarter not Harder," and "You Can Only Break the Rules Once You Know the Rules."

Varitey

Now I also want to emphasis that as I began to study Animation, in comparison to what I've learned from Japanese Animation or Anime, the same rules do not apply. Japan is a different culture so they have their own system that they operate by. Since I was inspired by Anime to pursue an Art career in the first place, I would always draw from this source whenever I started animating. My professors at Savannah College of Art & Design always thought I was not paying attention. They gave me a hard time. I was very studious, but I was not aware of things, and often too absorbed in my enjoyment of learning animation. As I was bless to learn more and more about Japanese culture along with anime, I came to learn an important lesson that people often seem to forget in the debate over animation from different cultures, ethnic groups, religion, etc. Animation here in America has its standards and Japanese Animation, or anime, has its standards. There is no right or wrong. They are different. Still there are exceptions where clearly, there is bad animation out there. Thus, when people ask me now if I think Anime is better than American Animation, I can say that I enjoy anime more because it does many things that American animation does not do to draw my attention. American Animation is great too, but Anime is what I find more interesting.

Web Design

While I was in college there was no Web Design program because our professor had to learn how to teach it. Gradually, there became classes for it in the Graphic Design department, and there was a separate major/minor setup for it. I think it was called Interactive Design. This is why we had to learn Flash and GoLive. They had Dreamweaver, but it was used more in the Interactive Design curriculum.

I have come to learn of the power of Web Design! If you ever learn Web Development then you could be unstoppable! Web Development involves Programming. Programming is the backbone behind a lot of technology. There were times when I'd go to the computer lab and you'd hear someone behind the scenes typing at a hundred miles per hour! It sounded like one of those car toys that you crank up and let run, only the cranking part doesn't seem to stop.

Basic Web Development involves learning HTML and CSS. I've been teaching myself these and they're not so bad once you get the hang of them. Then you go further by learning PHP, Javascript, MySql, C++, Python, and other programming languages. In Animation Python can be used with software such as Nuke to create a new automated script. Maya uses MEL, a programming language, that can allow you to do all the things that you already use a mouse to do with Maya.

Wordpress uses PHP to help create its sites. PHP is a dynamic programming language in that it makes your website interactive with other programming applications out there. To be even more specific, PHP is a dynamic programming language because as the server that host a website processes incoming data, new data is sent out. That's why you have to have a some kind of server to host a PHP site. In other words, there has to be something to process the database. An example of a dynamic site is Facebook. There are a lot of programs interacting with it in the background. HTML is a static programming language. It consist of the web page, images, and maybe a few links to other web pages in the same hierarchy, or folder directories. You can always see the website because the same data that goes into the server comes out, or the data is in a state that is always set.

Web Design is a continuously growing field. A good Web Developer or Web Designer will always be in need since technology today develops at a fast pace.

Graphic Design encompasses a lot of areas in the creative world. It can be a fun, creative, exciting, and rewarding career option for Artists. Personally, I love Animation so much more, but I cannot deny the value of Graphic Design in the role it played in my development as an Artist and Animator.
