Learning How to Sketch Well

If you are trying to learn how to sketch, it can be a challenging process, we are so used to seeing people who have intensely done works of art, and sketchbooks that would rival your finished drawings, that it can be a daunting task, don’t let that stop you. Think of a sketchbook like your best friends when you are trying to learn how to sketch, it’s your journal for your thoughts and feelings that you express with drawings, a place to practice drawing exercises, and a history that will show you progress as you get better every day.

Be Quick and Controlled

Remember that your sketchbook should be just for that, learning how to sketch, from time to time you may have a sketch that is more refined than another sketch that is in your book, but you want to make sure you are not finishing all your drawings in there. The biggest thing is that a drawing in a sketchbook may have to be removed where you risk tearing, and the paper isn’t meant for completed drawings, the quality is lower than that of the paper you would want to use for one of your masterpieces. To make sure you are staying true the to the nature of sketching make sure that you are drawing quickly, while maintaining some control, be loose but not insane

Don’t Erase

This is a tough one for many people, if you want to start drawing in your sketchbook, there are times where you are going to want to erase what you have drawn, don’t this, it is part of learning how to sketch. A sketch should not only show a small idea of what you are looking at and possibly an idea of what you want your finished drawing to look like, you should also be able to follow your pencil strokes and see how the forms of the paper where created. Knowing how you drew something is just as important when trying to progress forward with your art skills as anything else.

Take Risks

People think that when they are learning how to sketch that they should be reserved and try to follow only what they think they are capable of, but the truth is that your sketchbook is for your eyes only, take some time to do something outside of your comfort zone. There is something you have been dying to draw, and you know it, but you may have been scared to take a risk, this is your chance to take that risk, your sketchbook can be public or you can treat it like a diary no one has to see what you do in it, and any time you try and learn how to sketch something you see, you are developing your skills even further.

Keep a Sketchbook

At this point you have gotten that using a sketchbook is very important when learning how to sketch, but the mechanics of your sketchbook is what you really have to pay attention to. If you are like most artists in a matter of a couple of months you will have at least three sketchbooks, none full yet, and you are dying to get a new one. If you can get yourself to do it, stick with one sketch book, it’s a great way to really view your progress. Too many times have people gone to so many sketchbooks, they either loose a preliminary sketch, or they can’t see their progress because it is so scattered.

Learning how to sketch is a fun adventure that you can go on, and in the end, you will be shocked at how amazing your drawings can come out.
