Love for Anime

I LOVE anime! Sure enough as I was coming of age I grew out of cartoons. Tom & Jerry, Bugs Bunny, Yogi Bear, and company just were not interesting anymore. Then it all happened for me between the ages of 13-14. Everyone in town loved the way I could draw people and I had gotten many requests to do portraits. There was another guy at school who had the nerve to challenge me to an art competition. The crowd would decide the winner in the gym during our lunch break.

Thanks to a relative who had challenged me at age 8 with a seemingly impossible task, to draw people, I had set out since then to prove that I had the skills. It hurt like hell when I was 8 and couldn't draw the likeness of a person, so every other day I made sure to practice sketching a person when I got home from school. Then at age 13 something happen?!

I also attributed it to maturity. As experienced Artists often say, drawing is mental and it's our brain using the tools; our body as an extension, to create. At that moment, I had tapped into something where there was no longer any doubt or any obstacles blocking me mentally. I sat down with a picture of R. Kelly, who had just began his music career, and I started to draw. The drawing came out looking just like the picture!

About a week later, it was showdown at the high school gym. My competitor showed up with a drawing of Wolverine, and I dawned my portrait of R. Kelly. The crowd chose me hands down, and my competition was not too happy about it. He wanted to fight. This guy was 6'6" and scary. I was 5'7" at time. Lucky for me, a relative calmed him down. About 2 weeks later this guy started coming around to befriend me. It took me awhile to warm up to him, but he was one of the first people to introduce me to anime.

I brushed it off for almost a year, but he kept talking to me, and I kept thinking about it. Then he invited me over to his house with some other friends to watch some anime VHS tapes. I got to see Dragonball Z Movies 1-3 and some other anime shows that I can't remember the names of. I had also caught glimpses of Ronin Warriors from time to time and grew very intrigued by it.

After much thought, I realized that I do have an open mind and I am an artist. Heck, I could draw this stuff too, but anime presented itself to me as something refreshing! Who would ever imagine that a cartoon would explore serious subject matter, show such intensity in the style and character development, the experimentation was uninhibited, there were unbelievably graphic sexual themes depicted, the main character could fail, and death was all too common. Aside from the graphical sexual content which I don't have the stomach for, I was drawn to the spiritual content and determination of some of these characters to destroy their foes! My brain was ready to burst!

From that moment on I began to watch more and more of the action/adventure to science-fiction related anime shown on TV. My favorite shows to watch were Dragonball Z, Ronin Warriors, Outlaw Star, and Gundam Wing! It only got better as I went to college. I got to meet and make friends from Japan who were able to give me first-hand facts about their culture. I was like a kid in the candy store. I interviewed them and spent much time in the library studying the culture of anime.

Nowadays I'm continuing to enjoy Naruto Shippuuden, Bleach, Transformers: Super-God Masterforce, Berserk, Deathnote, Code Geass, and much, much more! Just had to get out the joy of one of my favorite hobbies which I draw much inspiration from.
