When In Doubt, Draw It Out

There can be times when, for whatever reason, an Artist may want to draw, but just can't seem to sit down and do it. There are many reasons for this, but I don't want to run off on a tangent, so I'll speak for myself. Often two things give me the most stress; 1. finding the next project to work on, and 2. having so many ideas I don't know where to start.

For myself in either case, I've found that pushing myself to draw is what works for me. As I'm having that stressful overload, I said, "forget it!" Then I sit down with my pencil and paper to draw. Without much effort, I am able to ease into a soothing state of mind where the creative juices flow. It's like connecting with something natural within me. Once I'm done drawing, I feel good! It often leads to more ideas, so I make sure to sketch the idea down, if it's something that stays on my mind.

Next, I often write about it. I make lists, charts for organization, and it even leads me into writing my own personal poetry.

Music has also played a big role in my life from an indirect position. Often I find myself relaxed and ready to create when I listen to music as I draw. The same thing happens for me when I write. I guess it could be described as a similar thing that meditation can do for the mind. You can go into this deep ambiguous state of mind that can be incomprehensible. Once I was listening to some of my favorite music while drawing an anatomy study for a class. Within a few minutes I found my rhythm with the music and at this point all the questions that I had in how to approach this anatomy drawing where unconsciously answered for me indirectly in my mind. I began to draw as the wind. It was effortless!

Then once when I was drawing, I came to this same state of mind, and I guess I had gotten so deep into it that my mind began to listen to the background music more while ignoring the lyrics. The song, that time, and that process began to take upon a whole new atmosphere. I was working late since I had just come from my part-time job that night at 10:00pm, and when I got this feeling I had so much energy I didn't feel the need to sleep. Of course, I made myself go to sleep at 5:00am just in case. I woke up at 6:30am to attend chapel services and classes thereafter.

Now, taking my own advice, I often wake up in the morning; eat breakfast, and start doing something creative on the computer. At this point I think, "oh, let's draw this out on paper." Drawing helps ground me, and give me a foundation to start from, so when in doubt encourage yourself to Draw it out!
