Bachelor of Vocation (Degree by TISS, Mumbai)

1. B. Voc in Early Child Development (3 year Degree programme)

2. B. Voc in Child Protection (3 year Degree programme)

3. Diploma in Geriatric Care (One year Diploma Programme)

In response to the growing demand for skill-based education, the Matru Sewa Sangh Institute of Social work established its ‘Department of Vocational Education (DVE)’ during the academic session 2014-2015, thus marking the beginning of its efforts to introduce vocational educational programmes to its bouquet of social work education. In January 2015, the Institute decided to join hands with the School of Vocational Education of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (Deemed University), Mumbai, in promoting vocational education in this part of the country.

It was in December 2011, that the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) had set up the School of Vocational Education (SVE) with a vision to create an ecosystem that would bring back the dignity of labour for blue collar streams of work and to create sustainable sources of income for the marginalized youth in the country. The SVE has been mandated to spearhead the Vocational Training envisaged in the initiative proposed by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India, wherein TISS has been selected as a nodal point to implement the initiative.

The SVE aimed at providing immediate and definite interventions to improve the lives of the disadvantaged and marginalized youth, especially who are excluded by the formal school education system through appropriate vocational training programmes. The target beneficiaries would include organized and unorganized labour, women, children, dalits and tribals.

For the first time in the educational history of India, by February 2015, vocational courses were launched by the TISS-SVE in the social sector. The Matru Sewa Sangh Institute of Social Work entered into a partnership with TISS Deemed University, Mumbai, to function as a ‘Hub Partner’ for offering three vocational courses, namely, B. Voc in Early Child Development, B. Voc in Child Protection and one year diploma in Geriatric Care.

The minimum educational qualification required for a candidate to join B. Voc courses is HSC (12th standard) pass, and for one year diploma in Geriatric Care the minimum qualification is SSC (10th standard) pass.

A salient feature of the B.Voc courses is that they are multilevel exit programmes. Which means that, if a student wishes to exit the programme after passing the examinations in the first year, he/she will get a Diploma; and if a student wishes to exit the programme after passing the examinations in the second year, he/she will get an Advanced Diploma; and on successful completion of the three years course, he/she will get the B.Voc Degree. The B.Voc courses would also permit re-entry to the programme after the student takes a drop, if required.
