Over the past few days I have written articles about Construction Supervisors and Project Managers and the rolls they play in Building Construction today we will discuss the roll that a Foreman plays in the scheme of things on a Building Construction project.
A Construction foreman is usually a person that has worked in a specific trade such as: a Carpenter or Mason. They went through there apprenticeship in the trades and had maybe 5 to 6 years working in the field. They are self-starters, very proficient reading drawings, and a team player.
The Construction Supervisors are always on the lookout for a person that can be put into the role of Construction Foremen because it adds another layer of supervision to the project and also more resources that can be tapped to make sure the project is constructed properly and all the trades people are qualified to be on the site and constructing the project to the best building construction practices.
The Construction foremen layout the work for their particular trade, check to make sure the products installed are according to the drawings and specifications for their particular trade discipline and that there are no code violations that are apparent when installing finished products such as door and frames in corridors that need to be fire rated. The construction foremen will check to make sure they have the proper tags before their carpenters install the doors, frames and hardware.
Whereas the construction Supervisor keeps track of all the trades people on the site and the hours spent. The construction Foremen keeps track of the time for his particular crew members and hands their time into the Supervisor so that he can pass the man hours to the Construction Project manager to get each crew member paid.
Another incentive to a become construction foremen is the raise in pay for the construction foremen and also on most building construction projects the construction foremen is guaranteed 40 hours a week whereas the rest of his crew with the exception of the steward will go home and not get paid if there is bad weather or products that need to be installed that not show up on time.
Being a construction foreman is usually the first step toward career advancement in a good building construction company. The progression is usually foremen for 2 to 3 years, then Construction supervisor for about 5 or 6 years then on ward to construction project manager.
Hopefully this short article will give you basic information on what a construction foreman does and what the need is for a construction foreman.
