The logo of a company is more than just a marketing tool. It sets a unique identity of the company by recognizing its business in brief. A good design makes the company easily identifiable to its customers. Choosing between a text-based and symbol-only logo requires logo designers understand the requirements of the company.
Designing a symbol-only or a name-less logo is not easy. It requires foresightedness, creativity and innovativeness on the part of the designers. In recent times, while a handful businesses like Nike, Apple, MacDonalds consider their symbol-based logo as perfect choices, it may not qualify as the right choice for small businesses.
Name-less logos are more complicated and more expensive for the following reasons.
• It Should be Suggestive: A symbol-only logo should be highly meaningful. The absence of text that can discuss the business of the company to its clients makes it essential for your logo to have some intrinsic meaning. As a little symbol acts as the face of its brand, designers should be very careful while deciding them.
• It Should be a Unique of its Class: Almost every possible design and shape has been experimented by people. To leave a mark in such a market, it is essential to create something that is a class apart and appealing.
• It Should be Communicative: The logo should be able to communicate your company's image. The more obscure the design is, the less likely that your customers will understand the meaning of your logo. In extreme cases, customers may either misinterpret your design or fail to establish a connection.
If you create a symbol-only logo design, the most probable challenge that you will encounter with regard to your company brand logo are as follows:
Take more effort and time on your part to educate your clients - There are innumerable companies that have symbol-only logos. However, only few are there whose logos are truly memorable. A diverse array of visual factors makes a professional logo design truly memorable, and may also include vast marketing campaigns, considerable advertising or wide investments.
Opt to design tactfully avoiding trademark infringement problems – Logo designers may opt to create a affordable logo design by taking inspiration from others of its type. But there are times when it becomes difficult for designers to design that is absolutely different from some other trademarked logo, regardless of how hard they try.
Trademark infringement problems arises as it is not possible for designers to comprehensively research on all trademarked logos before deciding on his/her design. Although designers opt to research well before creating a logo, some trademarked logo may get overlooked. This will lead to infringement problems.
You would be solely responsible for “policing” your own trademark and staying up-to-date with trademark applications.
To avoid all such complications, you may design a 'combination logo' that includes both a symbol and your company's name. A combination logo will also help your company stand apart as it will come up with your company's unique name.
