How Visitors View the Website

While developing a website you should take into consideration not only design and functionality but also the order in which your visitors perceive content on your website. Researchers have conducted numerous studies to learn what draws visitors’ attention first.

1. Top left corner first

When visitors land on your website they start observing the top left corner first and then proceed further.

It would be a good idea to review your website and concentrate on the areas highlighted in red and yellow. Place the most valuable information in the top left corner to make it instantly noticeable and visible to your visitors. If you have a vertical menu, it would be best to locate it on the left side of the website.

It is highly recommended to place your call to action information in the bottom right corner. Visitors will scan the content of the page, analyze it and in the end they will be ready to take action if the content was persuasive enough.

2. F-patterns

Most visitors simply scan through the content without actually reading it. Only 28% of the visitors read website written content. Research shows that people tend to read text in an F-shaped pattern: 2 horizontal lines first and then scan the text vertically. So make sure you place your valuable information in the top or vertically on the left.

3. Visually larger introductory paragraphs

Use boldface or bigger font size to make introductory paragraphs stand out. It encourages readers to read the text or at least part of it. People also like links. Of course adding more links than necessary is not a good idea. But a couple of links make the text look informative and interactive.

4. Most valuable content above the fold

Website visitors usually scroll down the pages. But as a rule they are most attentive to the content above the fold. That’s why it is smart to place most valuable content above the fold. What’s interesting though, is that the bottom of the page also catches lots of attention. You should definitely take advantage of this area, and utilize it correctly by placing your call to action items here.

5. Usage of high quality, large images

If you want your website to look contemporary yet professional, try using more images to draw visitors’ attention. Make sure you select the right images, though. After conducting numerous researches it became evident that images featuring models are mostly ignored and do not catch visitors’ attention. Images of natural and lively individuals are more appealing to website visitors.

6. Headlines and their impact on visitors

Large headlines are more likely to draw visitors’ attention as they land on your website. Headlines should include the most valuable offers and information. The information should be presented in a clear yet persuasive way. Visitors do not usually read the entire headline, they just view the first couple of words and if these words seam relevant visitors read on. As a rule, visitors spend less than a second on each headline. So it really matters what the first words of your headline are.

Hopefully these 6 points will bring more visitors to your website and prevent them from leaving the moment they land on the site.
