I have a friend that is into making Sea Glass Jewelry. She lives a considerable distance away from me but thanks to the Internet we are able to keep up with each other. She is not technically inclined but realized that she needed a website. Her customer’s kept asking if she had one that they could go to. Most of her business is done through Flea markets, Swap meets and the occasional Juried show. Her products are very popular and she does well each time she shows her work.
Last summer she came to visit for a few days. While she was here we sat down and thought about what she would like to have on her website. Since we were conversing at a vacation cottage, there was no internet available. How the heck do you create a website if you can’t reach the internet? It is really quite simple, there are some utility programs that are created that will allow you to make you personal computer into an offline hosting environment.
These utility programs are called WAMP servers for the older windows only environment or XXAMP servers for an updated version available on most platforms. What this does for you is enable you to create a website on your own computer. It is quite simple to move this completed site over to a live site when complete.
We sat down over a couple of nice fruit drinks with little umbrellas in them and added a Beach Scene to the Header, then created an about me and Privacy Policy pages. For the about me page, I just asked her a couple of questions after starting my Voice recognition program and the computer virtually wrote the page for me. Of course, with voice recognition the text is never 100% correct so we had to edit it a bit but in less than ½ and hour we had a website ready to go.
The next morning we had a marathon session with a camera and took pictures of all of her little Sea Glass trinkets, posted the pictures to the site and added an e-commerce plugin and prices.
A bit more time to setup the plugin to accept online payments and we were done.
We had a great weekend catching up, created a website and got her online the very next day when I got home and had an internet connection. By the time she finished driving home she was online.
When I started my online education I was one of those folks that had a bit of knowledge but it was all old information. I basically had to learn everything about creating websites and building a web presence from the ground up. I was fortunate that I found an online training site that helped me to learn everything I needed to know about marketing and building a website.

Really like your article. I have got to check out that offline suggestion.
Craig, I recently did the exact same thing for a friend. The problem is she has very little knowledge of computers so the maintenance is all up to me :) How did you turn maintenance over to your friend?
Good article, Craig. Checked out your website and you have a lot of great info. Thanks
