Working With Facebook And Other Social Networking Websites

Working with Facebook, Myspace, Twitter and any other Social Networking website can be hard. There are many different reasons for this but there is one connection they all share and that is notifications! If like me you work in Social Networking a lot then you will constantly be on Facebook, Myspace etc. Some people actually get addicted to this and are constantly on it. I personally don't want to be on it all the time but have no choice due to my line of work. This can be very distracting, when you have to work with a social networking website it's hard to ignore the notifications you get. You are working and you see you have a new notification and more times than not you are thinking "oh wonder what this is, let's click!"

As we all know this is a huge time waster and can make a 30 minute job turn into a 1 hour job. There is no real way to stop this from happening other than self discipline and only going on the social networking website when you really have to. For example do all the design work offline, this could take several hours anyways so you do not want to be online chatting and being notified of new things. You would not do this in a workplace working 9 - 5 so why do it now? (although that is debatable I see lots of people who have a 9 - 5 job on Facebook haha).

Anyways the point is, you should not be on Facebook you should be working, if you have a lot of self control then this will not be an issue for you. For someone who gets addicted to constantly checking for new updates and comments/messages it can be a little harder. For most people they do not need to work with a social networking website they just choose to go on it while they are at work because they are "bored" or "sick" so they do both to try and make that time pass and make the daunting task they call work easier to put up with. I'm not having a rant at people in "boring" jobs rather I am stating how repetition can lead to them losing interest and resorting to Facebook for some communication to pass the time.

So for a social network designer it can be hard to avoid going on Facebook or Myspace however this does not mean you have to give in and check / reply to all your notifications there and then. By all means get on the website, do what you need to do for work / the client and then once you have finished the work then you can spend time checking up on things. As it goes "work before play!"

The problem for myself is I am often creating a Facebook tab design for my clients. Which then opens up the world of Facebook to me meaning I could be distracted by notifications. Fortunately for myself I have a lot of self control so this does not really affect me, for others however I recommend turning the Chat off and ignoring any notifications you get until you have completed the task at hand!

I hope this little article has helped anyone struggling to work in social network design with the many distractions it can bring.
