Destination Weddings: When Going To A Wedding Actually Means “Going”
Join 1000's of Authors at StreetArticles Today!

Planning a wedding is an interesting concept. You have to find the right time, the right date, the right dress. Oh, and of course, the right place. But, the right place can be wildly different for each couple.

Some couples would not dream of being wed outside of a church for instance. Some couples would not set foot inside of one. Some couple merely want to have a civic ceremony and then go back to their day to day lives. (Sounds like a really fun couple, no?) And some couples are a bit more adventurous, a bit more thrill seeking and a little bit harder to pin down to one location for very long. So, for them, the idea of a destination wedding comes into play.

Exactly how it sounds, a destination wedding is merely one where the bride and groom choose a destination based on previous experience, sentimental attachments or legal reasons and then invite a small circle of loved ones to join them on the journey. If they can afford to do so, the bride and groom may offer to pay for or help pay for airfare and/or accommodation for select guests, but it is generally a pay your own way prospect.

Whenever you are invited to this type of wedding, it is not only the union of close friends, but a chance for a really nice vacation as well, so if you can go, you should by all means go!

If you are planning this type of wedding, make sure that everyone knows that from the outset. Do not wait until after the bridal shower to announce that there not be a local ceremony and that many of the attendees will not even be invited. Consider asking someone to hold a reception in the local area on the same day of the distant wedding and call to thank those who attended for “sharing” this day with you.

Don’t expect everybody that you actually invite to be able to go, especially if you did not give them much of a prior notice. Work, personal commitments and financial issues may keep some of your very favorite people from coming. It does not mean that they love you any less, so keep that in mind. Many people are uncomfortable talking about their money with others, even people they have known most of their lives ( or are related to, for that matter) so ask and then back off.

If you cannot afford to help anyone get there or stay there, but you still want to show your appreciation to those who come, consider having tee shirts printed up and given to your guests. Include the couples names, the wedding date and of course, the location. ( If you are getting married in a hotel or other place of business, ask if they would give you a discount on the venue by mentioning their name on these shirts, you might be shocked. )

Finally, no matter where you are getting married and how many people are there to watch it happen, realize that eventually you will return to your hometown as man and wife, so do this as gently and tactfully as you can. And try not to rub the exotic locale in everyone’s faces all at once.
