How To Repair A Broken Relationship

It can be quite confusing, I know. You’ve invested time in a relationship as well as what I like to call ‘emotional capital’. You’d hate to see the effort go for nothing, and it feels like that is what’s happening. As a result, you may be just pretending to be happy, and unsure of what your next move should be. As you might imagine, that can put a further strain on the relationship. Where once you felt comfortable sharing everything you felt, you’re now hesitant, almost secretive, to the point of making you feel guilty and even dishonest. It’s time to stop dwelling on that and set your mind to learning how to repair a broken relationship.

When you begin the process of fixing your broken relationship, you need to consider what you want and don’t want in a relationship. Some of those things may seem self evident; not wanting to be cheated on, not abused, not ignored, etc., but you need to make yourself aware of them, so prepare a list. On the other hand, list what it is you want. These could include romance and excitement, and intellectual or spiritual stimulation. What thing or things are necessary to make these things happen? It could be weekend trips to wine country or sporting type outings. Maybe attending lectures or church together.

When you’ve completed your list, consider which ones are really important to you. Then consider your current situation and try to determine if the things you want are possible. Observe your partner and try to determine if they are capable of growing in the area or areas you are interested. Your partner is critical in the process of learning to repair a broken relationship.

If things are really bad at this moment, you may need to take a step back and get some clarity on the situation. I don’t recommend separation, but rather a ‘relaxing’ of the relationship for a period of time. It could be as simple as taking a weekend or week apart. Something like a golf trip, or going to the lake with the girls. Make sure though that you have some down time to reflect on the relationship. Then you’ll be able to more clearly assess the situation without the stress of it right in front of you.

After clearly looking at the situation, you may determine that it’s not in either of your best interest to continue the relationship. Sometimes that’s the best course to take, and that’s OK! A clear and rational ending to a relationship can be a springboard to future healthy relationships. If on the other hand you and your significant other decide you are capable of making things work, make sure that you and your partner are open, honest, communicative, and are both willing to work to learn how to repair a broken relationship.

Learning to repair a broken relationship can not only help save yours, but can be a project both of you can work on together, and everything goes better when you’re working together!
