Writing your own wedding vows…where do you start? I know, I know, you want to write your own wedding vows, but don’t know where to start. It can be a daunting task, but following the step-by-step instructions below can help you find the right words for your special day.

Do you have the wording right? Before you begin, make sure you speak to your future spouse AND the person who will officiate your ceremony. All three of you should participate in this conversation because many religions have required and/or traditional wording that must be used in your wedding vows; others let you “do your own thing” as long as you use certain phrases. You’ll also want to decide if you are going to write one vow that each of you will recite, or if you each want to write vows to say individually.

Now that you know what you have to say, how are you going to say it? Grab a piece of paper and something to write with…it’s time to go to work. Review the questions below and write down everything that comes to mind. It doesn’t matter if you think you’ll use it or not; this is just a brainstorming session to gather some ideas.

o What does marriage mean to you?

o What’s the one thing that made you fall in love with your fiancé?

o Why does your fiancé fit into your picture of a great spouse?

o Was there a special time/event that made you realize you were going to marry your fiancé (even before the proposal)?

o What’s your favorite memory of your relationship so far?

o What is it about your fiancé that makes you believe you’ll both be able to make it through the tough times?

o How does your fiancé support you emotionally and/or spiritually?

Ask the Experts. Take some time to read through other wedding vows, poetry, love stories, etc. We have a whole list of them prepared wedding vows for you to review and use, if you like. Or you can print out our favorites (or copy and paste them into a Word document) and compile them in the next step.

Now You’re Ready to Combine Everything for Your Perfect Wedding Vows. Grab all the special thoughts you had about your fiancé, the poetry, the sample wedding vows, etc. and let’s get to work. Begin by eliminating some of the less important points. Remember, you don’t want to write a novel…just hit the important points. Now that you have the important points, merge that information into one of the pre-written vows or poems you chose earlier.

Review. Begin by reading out loud what you’ve written. You might also want to consult with a trusted friend, parents or your officiator to see if they have any helpful suggestions to improve your wedding vows before you make your final revisions. While working on the final version, practice reading it out load. Make sure you’re comfortable with every word of it. Now practice, practice, practice. Keep in mind that you might be a little nervous when reciting these vows. It may be wise to ask the person officiating to help you if you get stuck; so, make sure the officiator has a copy.

Now go and enjoy one of the best days of your life!
